Getting off old stripes

Are you trying not to hurt the paint underneath? Are you going to repaint? If you aren't worried about the paint underneath then a razor blade is how we always removed stripes while I was working in the body shop. Just a flat blade and slide it along under the stripe.

We use eraser wheels here at the shop. They are just a big round pencil eraser on a shaft that mounts to your drill motor. It pulls the stripe off in record time without burning through the clear coat.
There are a few brands out on the market, but I recomend the 3M #06336.
