As I said earlier I went back today to take a second look and I got the numbers. Vin is 8R01C166076, and 65B D 6U 12F 75 2 1. I am now going to get a Marti report. The only remaining thing that bothers me is the lack of hood latches. The hood has never been drilled for them.

It is a San Jose car with a 289 engine as per the vin.
Here are the decoded Data Plate numbers:
65B= Hardtop Luxery Interior
D= Acapulco Blue exterior
There is no "6U" so it is either 6O or 6V.
6O= Parchment bucket seats Luxery (most likely this one)
6V= Parchment vinyl bucket seats
12F= June 12th build date
75= Phoenix, Arizona DSO
2= 2.79:1 Axle Ratio
1= 3 speed Manual Transmission
Maybe the Marti report will mention it had the hood locks deleted. I did hear of a lady who had the hood locks taken off her new GT/CS at the dealership. I think they had to get a different hood to make her happy.

Thanks Rhonda. It looks like a done deal on my end. I guess I need to hunt down that piggybank it seems to have disappeared since I started talking about buying this car. Will post pics as soon as I get her home

Is my source correct????? (MUSTANG SECRET DECODER BOOK) Bob here.

The decoder I used did`nt have 6U as a code, so I assumed it was either 6O or 6V. It did`nt have the DSO # for Phoenix either but since my car has the same #, I knew it was Phoenix.

HCBob,your source must be correct because that is what the car has. I had a decoder like mustanglvr's so I wondered about the interior and the DSO. Phonenix would go along with the history I have so far. The cars first owner was from El paso. Would no lower console be correct for a 3 spd. , it does have the overhead console.

My car with Phoenix DSO #75 was sold from the dealer at Kemp Motor Company El Paso, Texas. Can anybody see if Roadbum`s vin number is in the registry? Or have we done that already? It`s all a blurrrrrr......

I checked and the only number close to mine is 166072. But, ain't that weird. Maybe you should check your garage.

Roadbum,

The lower console was a standalone option. Meaning, any car could be ordered with it, or without. The overhead console came with the Deluxe Interior option and could not be ordered separately.

Thanks Mike, Now can anyone tell me if the cutouts for the tailpipes was a GT option.

Ron,

Yes, the cut outs were part of the GT option. But a C code could not have been a GT. You had to have a 302 or bigger engine. Many people add the cut out valance. It's on mine and mine is a C code.

Mine was built May 15th, a few thousand before yours with a vin number of 8R01T162217.

It's just strange. 38 years later and they were probably sold from the same dealer. The world truly does get smaller everyday. Hey, if you guys ever get tried of my questions just tell me to go home....
Mike you are the man, that answers about a dozen of my other questions. That ought to keep me quiet for a few days.

For what it's worth.
My car was scheduled for 5/13 but actually built 4/30.

Also Phoenix - My Vin 160200

They went through a lot of VINs in 2 weeks! Wow!!
I know they're not all exactly sequential but still a lot!

:undecided Somebody enlighten me? I undersatnd that a #s matching absolutely pristine, with low miles, car is going to command big bucks to the right people. But, how much do cosmetic changes, made in the true spirit of the Mustang, hurt the price? And I am only talking about bolt on,minor changes without trying to scam someone. Maybe even upgrading ignition systems and topping out the potential in an engine. Or adding a few GT goodies to spiff it up a bit.

It all depends on the buyer ... he may like what you did, and may be willing to pay more for the car ... if not, like you said, if it's simple "bolt-on stuff," then it can always be reversed ...

That is what I thought.
Keep the original parts and if someone wants they can change it back. To me , a thing is useless if you can't use it. Not abuse but use for your own and others enjoyment.

I am the type of buyer that likes original only. If a car has a bunch of bolt on stuff (even if it can be put back to original) I will pass on the car.

I do hope you have some cars you can actually have fun with, Jason.
