I have a 68 GT/CS, black, 428CJ. Very nice, all restored, I would say it is not quite concourse, but definately an excellent. I had it at the Snohomish car show this past weekend and received many "wows". I want to sell this, but I have no idea of value. Please help.

Gina,
Take a look at the "price guide" on your left...this has been compiled by a member of the forum and it would be a good start to figure what your car is worth. Good luck!

You have a VERY RARE car and few were made. First I will tell you to post the vin number to check if its a real GT/CS and if it is a genuine R-code 428. With that information the knowledgeable people in this forum might give you a good estimate of the car. Do you have a Kevin Marti report on this car? It will verify that is a true GT/CS and thats a good start!!

Best of luck!!!

Yes, a 428 CJ Special is definitely a rare car. So rare that StraightSix (author of the price guide) didn't include the increased value of it because he couldn't find any supporting sales to base his numbers on.

Gina, this past thread (http://californiaspecial.com/forums/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=225) may be of some interest to you. It's a conversation that StraightSix had with Bob Teets, who runs the HCS Registry. Bob owns at least one 428 HCS and keeps pretty good tabs on the others out there. He's a very good source of info on the 428 Specials.

Gina,
I subscribe to a popular price guide called CPI (Cars of Particular Interest).
For what it's worth, the latest edition (Sep/Oct '03) lists the following retail values for a '68 GT/CS with a 428:
FAIR (#4) condition: $6,450 PLUS $ 4,500 for the 428;
GOOD (#3)condition: $11,500 PLUS $6,000 for the 428;
EXCELLENT (#2) condtion: $21,850 PLUS $7,500 for the 428.

Several comments: the earlier replies advising you to verify that your car is a true GT/CS with an original 428 are excellent advice. Condition and other equipment also have tremendous impact on value.

And quite bluntly, I have found that owners tend to overrate the condition of ther cars. Many times sellers have told me their car is a #1 or #2 car, and I've found these cars to be #3 (on a scale of 1 to 5). Remember, there are very few true #1 cars.

While I have found CPI pricing to be 'in the ball park' as I've bought and sold cars through the years, it is just a guide. I still believe in that old axiom: A collectibe anything is only worth what a seller is willing to sell it for, and a buyer is willing to buy it for.

Good luck to you in your efforts.

Just to clarify, the VIN for the car Gina submitted to me is an "S" code 390. This doesn't mean the current 428 wasn't swapped in (either by the dealer or a past owner) but I just wanted to point that out for those that might be looking for a "R" code 428 car.
