All you "go fast" guys and gals,
After much deliberation, I sold my 69 428 Cobra Jet, and numbers match C6 with a Gear Vendors overdrive to a Mustang restorer in the Nebraska. If is going into an “R” code 1969 Mach I. This motor had been in my family since 1977 with its last home in my 57 Wagon that I also sold, but it seemed like it was time to go. A perfect 428 for an August 1968 build of a 69 Mach I. Even its casting dates were all within 3 days of each other. The new owner is very happy!!

My first thoughts were to put the 428 in my GT/CS. Almost did it, but the 302 is a perfect platform to go from mild to wild!! Aluminum Edlebrock performer RPM intake and heads. Roller cam and valve train. Crower sportsman connecting rods and Aries pistons in a “Mexican” 302 block.

So the GT/CS will soon have a 3.70 9 inch with a 4 pinion trac loc and 31 spline axles. I have ordered the “A O Dominator” from Performance Automatic Transmission Center out of Louisiana. This is PATC’s top of the line automatic overdrive with a 2,500 stall converter and lower first and second gear. MSD 6AL with the chip at 6,500 or maybe 7,000 depending on how the cam reacts.

I am rebuilding the steering box, ram, and control valve vice the power rack and pinion. Once all this is done, I am buying the Paxton/Novi right side mount supercharger!! As Joe will say “When atmosphere is not enough”!!! Ran one of these on my first Mustang in 1972!! In a 289 with stock iron heads. Made great power. I made a believer out of a mildly built 1972 454 Camaro one day on our local two lane highway/1/4 mile marked illegal track. I marked the quarter mile with my Dad’s 50 foot tape measure myself one night. 26 times and 20 feet more!! Beat him by about 5 cars!

This setup should just scream!! I can’t wait!!

I also enjoy every episode of "Campbell's Corner". Rob has generously helped me out from behind the scenes as well.

No problem. Just acting dumb.

Rob, I probably don't have to tell you this, but I recommend you use Cometic MLS head gaskets if you are going to have much boost at all.

Have fun!!!!

Joe,
Had all sorts of problems back in 72 with my first Paxton. Blew head gaskets right and left. Mostly it would "boost" the water jackets and push all of the fluid out of the radiator.

Finally "O" ringed the combustion chambers of the heads. This ended all of my problems.

I would like more detail on the head gaskets you mentioned. I have not heard of them, but I have been out of the "boost" business for quite sometime!

I blew a head gasket within about a week of installing my blown 347 in my GT/CS. I started looking at O-ringing the heads, but was told that it was not necessary now with the Multi Layered Steel head gasket technology. I put a set on and had no more problems.

The following is from the Cometic website:

"MLS stands for Multi-Layer Steel. MLS head gaskets are comprised of three layers of stainless steel. The outer layers are an embossed viton coated stainless steel providing a superior seal with excellent rebound characteristics and are corrosive resistant. MLS head gaskets reduce bore distortion and withstand extreme cylinder pressures."

Thanks Joe! Sumitt Racing has an o-ring head gasket made by SPE for about $259 a pair. Yours are cheaper and made of stainless steel.

No problem, Robert. If I remember correctly these gaskets aren't as thick as conventional gaskets either, so make sure you take that into consideration when you calculate your CR.

Joe,
Good comment. I am very familiar with "crush" of head gaskets. The 289 in 67 Fastback has 12.5 pop ups and milled heads. Huge solid roller cam. Had to check for both spring bind and valve to piston clearance. .120 on both the intake and exhaust valve for valve to piston clerance. .080 is normal minimum for a high performance engine. I am very close, but had a bit of a cushion....

Isn't more comression always better??? Just being funny. More is always better!!!

Some of you guys always seem to push the limits as far as you can. Why can't you be just a little more conservative?

Like that would be even remotely possible. I don't know about it being an "important" date, but hopefully tomorrow will be fun-filled.
