Hey all,

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but can the mechanical distributor advance on our '66 - 289 be checked on the car, but the vacuum advance needs to be checked on a distributor machine?

Thanks, Dave

You can more or less check both on the car.
To check the mechanical advance unhook and plug the vacuum hose, check the timing at idle, rev the engine to 3,000rpm and check the timing again. The timing should move a little.

To check the vacuum advance attach the vacuum hose and do the same thing. You should end up with more advance than with just the mechanical. Around 35 degrees is good.
