The Ultimate Road Trip Music

Been on the iTunes web-site for the last few hours downloading songs for my upcoming road trip and I thought it'd be cool if we could identify the all time greatest road trip songs (so I can spend more money).

We're talking windows down (no matter how hot or cold), highway cruising with the exhaust blaring out the background accompaniment.

This is what I have so far, in no particular order. Some may seem a little mellow but I think that is the art to making a road-trip collection. Gotta have some of the slow stuff in there once in a while, especially near the speed traps.

Every Rose has its Thorn - Poison
South City Midnight Lady – Doobie Brothers
I can't Drive 55 - Sammy Hagar
Roll Me Away – Bob Seger
Turn the Page – Bob Seger
The Load Out / Stay – Jackson Browne
Summer of 69 – Bryan Adams
Don’t Look Back – Boston
25 or 6 to 4 – Chicago
Layla – Derrick & the Dominoes
Juke Box Hero – Foreigner
Carefree Highway – Gordon Lightfoot
Cherry Bomb – John Cougar Mellencamp
Don’t Stop Believin' – Journey
Sweet Home Alabama – Lynyrd Skynyrd
Paradise by the Dashboard Lights – Meatloaf
Renegade – Styx
Panama – Van Halen
River of Stone – Restless Heart
Rock & Roll Dreams – Meat Loaf
Speed – Montgomery Gentry
Between You and Paradise – Sawyer Brown
Not Ready to Make Nice – Dixie Chicks

Any other ideas for the ultimate road trip songs?

Well, we both know my tastes run a little bit to the wilder side, so here's a few songs by your artists(except for Meatloaf-we won't go there).

Poison: Ride the Wind
Doobie Bros.: China Grove
Bob Seger: Get out of Denver
Jackson Browne: Late for the Sky (that's from memory-I'll have to check)
Styk: Blue Collar Man

And let's throw in, for the heck of it:
Foghat: Fool for the City
Edgar Winter Group: Frankenstein
Golden Earring: Radar Love
Head East: Never gave me no Reason (you'll recognize it when you hear it)
Eagles: Get over it

That's the best I can do for you brother, without risking you rupturing a blood vessel in your skull. :frust: (the closest I could come to a head-banger)

Don`t forget the song "I`m In Love With My Car" by Queen.

"Bohemian Rapsody" is great too.

Anything from Def Leppard is good too.

Dang...talk about road music...I have most all of the above listed songs on cassette tapes...and they have a bazillion miles on them, literally. When I listen to them today it puts me on a backroad or a freeway somewhere in my memories...." I remember the days on the road, I almost died there......"

"If I can just get offa this LA freeway without gettin' killed or caught...."

You know the tunes , I know you do. Wow, a lot of big rig miles and memories just thinking about those songs. Thanks for the White Line Fever Arlie!

My pappy said son you're gonna drive me to drinkin' if you don't stop drivin' that hot rod Lincoln.

(Hot Rod Lincoln with lyrics changed)

Let me tell ya about my new steed,
built for comfort, just my speed.
Ford Mustang, modified to set the pace,
Man, I could hardly wait to get out'n'race.

It's got a 289 motor, with a special Cobra kit,
there ain't nothin' on the road that can even touch it.
It's got eight carburetors and it uses them all,
with a four-speed stick that just won't stall.

With that transistor iginition and power-pipe exhaust,
this is the machine that'll really get lost.
Everthing built to make it perform,
it may not be hot but it sure is warm.

We took delivery at the factory late one night,
it was purrin' like a kitten and movin' just right.
We pulled up on the freeway like it was goin' down hill,
and started passin' the sleds like they was standin' still.

Then all of a sudden, before I could bat an eye,
a Cadillac sedan passed me by.
Somebody said, like, "that's the wheels for me,"
but by then the tail lights was all I could see.

Well, these cats ribbed me for bein' behind,
so I started to make that Mustang unwind.
Pushed the foot-feed clear to the floor,
said "that's all there is, there ain't no more."

Smoke was rollin' outta the back,
when I started to gain on that Cadillac.
I was sure I could catch him 'n' I hoped I could pass,
but by then I knew I'd be short on gas.

We went around a curve and passed a truck,
I pulled out my rabitt's foot, just for luck.
The fenders just missed the guardrail post,
the guy in the back was white as a ghost.

I glanced over at the chick on the other side,
her face was blue 'n' I thought she'd died.
But I wasn't worried, 'cause what the heck,
by now me 'n' that Caddy was neck-and-neck.

I guess they'd thought I'd lost my sense,
the telephone poles looked like a picket fence.
They said "slow down, I see spots,
the lines on the road just look like dots."

Went around a corner with the tires on the side,
you could feel the tension, man, what a ride.
I said "hold on, I got a license to fly,"
and that Cadillac faded back and let me by.

Then I looked in the mirror 'n' saw somethin' comin',
and I thought it was a plane by the way it was hummin.
I'd been caught by a helicopter 'n' the CHP,
that was it, man, the end of me.

Well, they busted me and threw me in the can,
so there was nothin' I could do but call the old man.
He said "wail in jail, 'cause I won't bail."
Dang me, he told me not to hop up that Mustang!

Very nice Mustanger!!!

Thanks, but I can't take credit for it ... here's the story:

HOPPED-UP MUSTANG by Arlen Sanders
written by Bill Romberger & Arlen Sanders
Faro 616, 1964
Billboard review date: Unknown
Chart position: Did not chart

If Charlie Ryan had been around to hear this, he may have been able
to collect some royalties on it. Arlen Sanders was a DJ at radio
station KRLA-Los Angeles around the time this record was released.
Basically, its "Hot Rod Race/Lincoln" with some word changes about
a Mustang. The whole thing is recited over the Astronauts' LP track
"Movin'", without any credit to them. To add insult to injury, the
label says "Music by the Pacifics." Throughout the song are sounds
of tires screeching and various other sound effects.

Great collection. Ones I always like to listen to for the road are:
Ted Nugent: Stranglehold.
The Cars: Moving in Stereo.
and a lot more, but those quickly come to mind.

Sounds like your tastes are closer to mine. I mentioned two Nugent songs off the same albumn on another thread.

Might have found the best road song but I'm still looking.

Flirtin with Disaster, Molly Hatchet!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steve, I tried to check out your songs but iTunes doesn't carry most them. They must be a little obscure.

iTunes is great. 99 cents per song. Better than paying $14 for a CD to get just one song off it.

I could see the Jackson Browne song but not the rest of them. I guess I'm going to have to break down and buy the stuff to copy albumns to my computer so I can cut you a CD and mail it to you.

Well, my taste is a lot more on the "mild" rather than "wild" side, But along the "car" songs theme:

455 Rocket - Kathy Mattea
Chrome - Trace Adkins
I Love L.A. - Randy Newman
"Crusin' down, Imperial Highway, big nasty redhead at my side..."
(I drive Imperial every day, and my husband's a redhead  )
