I spoke with Bob Teets (HCS Registy) for a good while the other night. He's still getting the hang of the whole computer thing, so he asked me to pass along some of what we talked about.

First of all, he bought his first Cal Special the other day! We all knew he would come around one of these days ;)

He also told me about his newest favorite place to visit (forgive me Bob if I play up the drama and embellish a little). The largest classic Mustang salvage yard in the world is about 30 minutes out of Denver! It's called Colorado Mustang Specialists and they have enough junked Mustangs to make you both giddy and a little sad. They're piled 3 high, with convertibles sitting on the top. I forget how many acres they're on but it's a bunch. You can't go into the yard by yourself -- usually you ask for a part and they pull it -- but Bob's special and got to take a tour courtesy of the owner! The owner pointed out 4 GT/CS's and 2 HCS's. One of the GT/CS's is being restored as we speak (they restore and sell the nicer cars). There were also 2 Playboy Pink 'Stangs. The yard gets most of their cars from a local towing and insurance salvage company called Klodes.

Bob also spoke to Annie Goodrow (sp?), who was the dealer marketing manager (or something like that - Bob, please correct me as I didn't write it down) for Colorado Ford Dealerships. Among her credits were the Ski Country Special and the She Country Special. That's a new one to me!

Bob confirmed that there were 251 '68 HCS, but notes that the new Marti number for '67's is 416.

He later went on to tell me about Ford's HCS marketing plan in June of '68. They took several HCS to the Continental Divide Raceway in Colorado for parade laps, and Colorado dealers were invited. Bob was fortunate enough to come across and orginal program with insert from this event. Hopefully we'll get to see some of it someday!

Our conversations eventually found their way to the discussion of the big block GT/CS and HCS. Bob feels that the prices on the 390's that we've been discussing (and that appear in my guide) are a pretty good estimate. As for the 428's, though, he agrees that it's a seller's market. With only 9 confirmed HCS 428's produced (6 in the registry, one of those owned by Bob)and an estimated 26 GT/CS 428's, they're extremely scarce. If you find a nice one, Bob and I agree that you had better have about $45 grand in the old bank account if you want to drive it home. And even then, it may take some convincing to get the seller to part with it. It took Bob 15 years of asking the owner (4 times per year) to get his!

Bob confirmed my guesstimate about the values of '66-'67 HCS's compared to their normal versions. He agreed that $1000 or so more than a comparable normal Mustang is about right.

On the topic of GT/CS and HCS restoration items, let me say that Bob has some nice ones brewing for us! I won't go into detail (so that Bob isn't pressured), but look to see some scoop screen kits soon and some pedestal kits not too long after that. He's had quality machine shop work done on them and he plans on letting us have the "club discount" :D

As far as GT/CS and HCS stripe kits go, he says that Steve Goehring is the man to go to (559-875-8898). Steve is a paint a graphics expert, and is featured in Paul's 1996 Registry (pg. 131) as the recommended source for stripes. Steve was even able to fill Bob's custom gold stripe order with a perfect, color-matched product! Though many parts dealers carry black and white kits, Steve does all colors! Please note that the number above reflects Steve's new area code.

Well, that's about all of the notes I have from our conversation, though there was quite a bit more than that! Don't hesitate to call and talk to Bob if you have any questions. He's more than happy to help. His number can be found in the Registry section on this site.

Thanks, Bob! ;D

Winston,
all I can say is incredible!! A great insight to a man that has been in love with the 68 GT/CS & HCS for quit a while. I can't wait to see what he is going to produce for the cars.
