Gas cap

Would the original gas cap have had the tether chain or no? Thinking about buying an NOS as mine is looking a little old.

The GT/CS gas cap is spring loaded to open, hinged on the bottom. No chain.

Thanks, Neil! I think mine is original, and has no chain. When I started looking around I saw some with chains and I didn't even know that existed. Can you educate me on what did have the chain? I know mine has left a slight mark on the bumper, so the chain seems like a good idea.

The standard gas caps are twist-off with a retaining chain. GT's, GT/CS, Shelby's use the spring loaded caps. Various vendors list both types.

To avoid marking or chipping the chrome on the bumper under the cap, I keep a clean shop rag in my glove box. When I gas up, I just fold the rag and lay it on the bumper under the cap and then open the cap so that it sits on the rag.

I didn't think I would be the only one. For the few seconds it takes, you make sure the chrome bumper is protected.

I have yet to figure out how to put gas in the tank without spilling those EPA spring loaded nozzles appear to be smarter than me.

I got tired of that to. So I installed a straight pipe in the trunk up to about the trunk opening with a gas cap. A small bracket to the hood hinge bolt. Left the stock one on with a blank off plate. No permanent modification and can be put back stock in about 30 minutes.

A great fix for those that drive our cars and do not like to ruin their paint or get on the hands and knees to fill up. You can stand up and fill like the rest of the driving public.

I keep extra in the trunk in case the station doesn't have any.
