1968 Wheel (Rim & Tire) Insights and Advice

My GT/CS came off the lot with standard 1968 rims/tires. I am going to assume they are still the 14's.

I have read quite a bit on here regarding tire choices and it seems that the Firehawk is highly regarded.

I am considering getting some 68 GT rims for it. I have been told by Mustang Ranch that 14's suck these days.

I know they make some pretty good repos for larger tires, so I wanted to get some insight on what I should go with or consider?

On eBay they have these:

14"x6" - $748.95 for (4)
14"x7" - $748.95 for (4)
15"x7" - $748.95 for (4)
15"x8" - $788.95 for (4)

Should I consider one size over the other? What kind of thickness of tire should I consider with the choice? Anything else I should think about?

You have two style choices with the reproduction '68 Styled Steel Wheels.
One option is just like the original with an outer trim ring, but the other option eliminates the trim ring and incorporates an all-chrome wheel.

A 15" wheel will give you many more tire options. Do you want black-wall or raised white letters?

Here is the all-chrome wheel.

The ones I am looking at are exactly like those. These are the ones that eliminates the trim ring I believe.

I am thinking that I would like the raised white letters for the tires.

I'm an old school type guy, and I have always stuck with the 14 x 6 SS wheels. Painted or chrome. BF Goodrich T/A Radials. I have never had problems with fit or performance. I know a lot of folks like going for 15s, and I will leave it up to them to advise, but I like stock. Remember Mustangs had a natural reverse rake (sitting lower in the back) so larger wheels and tire profile may correct that, again, I will direct you to the experts. I have heard of some folks having clearance problems with front disc brakes (after market) and stock 14" rims. All things to consider. JMHO.

If you stay with 14" wheels and a tire size of 215-70R/14 I think your RWL tire options are BF Goodrich radial T/As, and Cooper Cobras.

A 215-65R/15 is a good alternative.

I'm with Mike on this one. I love the stock wheels (mine are argent) and BFG T/As. When I replaced the 60's that were on the car when I bought it, I went to the original size equivalent to my originals as per the Marti, which were E70-14's. The car looks "right" to me and drives wonderfully.

Thanks for the insight guys. I am truly torn as I love the GT rims and while they do fit on the car, they weren't original...

I like the SS wheels (Argent or chrome), non GT hubcaps as appropriate, OR the 15" Shelby's.

Can't go wrong with 10-spokes!!!

Another option is to use the '69 Magnum 500s, but IMO they look good only on cars with black stripes. They look great on this car.

Wheels are not a big deal if you are thinking of originality. As long as you hold on to the originals, it really doesn't matter what you put on. Back to stock is so easy...

Remember Mustangs had a natural reverse rake (sitting lower in the back) so larger wheels and tire profile may correct that...

Not if you do all 4 the same size, the front and rear lift/drop the same amount.

Back to stock is so easy...

As some tweak springs/leafs to suit stance to the tire, sometimes the look changes quite a bit if you go back....

205/70/R14's and new front springs a bit shorter/stiffer than stock

My "Back to stock" comment was only aimed at changing wheels and tires, not messing about with springs and ride height.

I'm here in San Jose if you want to see what original 14 inch styled steel wheels/rings and BFG 70 Series TA's look like in person. My car is also precisely on factory spec for ride height so you can see what the stance was meant to be. Also happy to share recommendations on local service sources that are top notch if interested.

I have a extra set of (4) 14 x 6 painted argent styled steel wheels just taking up space in my garage. I am willing to part with them.

Hi Calif Girl,

I am still learning all of the different wheel options. So I am not sure what "painted argent styled steel wheels" are specifically.

Same as the Styled Steel Wheel but center is painted Argent instead of chrome. Google it to see pics.
