1966-67 HCS temp sending unit?

hi all,

The temp gauge in our '66 - 289, auto, shows hot - the needle goes all the way to the right hand side and a little beyond the brackets that indicate "normal".

BUT with a hand held temp reader, the temp shows 190 at the t-stat housing.

The sending unit varies from 248 ohms when cold (70 degrees) to 21 ohms when at 190 degrees. The hotter temps lower the resistance.

The gas & oil pressure gauges work good, the ammeter has never worked well.

Is this an indication of a bad Constant Voltage regulator (CVR)? It's the little regulator that mounts on the back of the dash and supplies voltage to the instruments.

I've tried a couple of different temp sending units and and they all end up with the same temp reading on the gauge.

OR what can I do to get the gauge to read correctly?

Thanks for your help.
