The black trim around the tail lights. Under the black is chrome. The reproductions are painted black because they are actually a T-bird part.
When Ford originally used them for the GT/CS and '68 Shelby they left them chrome.

Even some high end restorations are incorrect. For 68 the Shelby, GTCS and HCS bezels are all chrome. You may be thinking of the regular mustang bezel that had the black in the center of it.

The bezels have a black border on them, because that is the way that they were made for the 1965 Ford Thunderbird.
