View Full Version : 68 GT/CS ORIGINAL OWNER
hubert 12/26/2002, 04:03 PM Our family is thinking of selling our 1968 California Special GT/CS. The car is owned originally by my father. The car was originally purchased in Honolulu Hawaii, then shipped here when my parents moved here to California. The engine sports a healthy, rare 390. The motor is stock. I had it repainted candy apple red about 12 years ago. The paint is still flawless, since it has been undercover in our garage for the past 12 years. I know this is hard to believe but it is all true. The interior is stock but had it re-done completely to stock. (help with Mustang Country formerly of Lakewood Ca) The car was last entered @ Knotts Berry Farm in Buena Park 12 years ago and placed 2nd. If you're intereseted we are taking serious offers only. Ill be able to post/send pics to anyone who is interested. We do know what this car is worth since we've been offered quite a few times. Now that we don't have room or the time, it has come to this decision. Thank you very much.
Bluestang 12/26/2002, 11:24 PM What is your asking price? What options? Is your car in the registry?
Thank you,
Kimball
StraightSix 12/27/2002, 06:42 AM Silly Bluestang, asking prices make it harder for you to gouge people. If you entertain offers, however, you can sell it for much more than it's worth if you happen to find a fool with money to burn ;)
Seriously, hubert, I would suggest posting an asking price. That way if you're asking way too much we can all rant about it ;D If you truly want to auction off your car, I would suggest eBay.
Also, I would really like to know what this car sells for if it sells, and also the amounts of the other offers you received. It would help me with my price guide, as I have yet to record a single data point for a big-block GT/CS.
Anyway, sounds like a sweet car - perhaps you should create a Yahoo Photo album so that we can all see it?

Ok, when the car was driven to Mustang shows, I had been offered anywhere from 13-$18,000 to some real mustang collectors. Even from the street we had been offered... We held off because we were not interested in parting with the car. I see most of the Ca Specials in here selling anywhere from $4-17,000. I don't know how rare or if they are being sold by the original owners as we are trying to do here. To a collector I know this car is priceless.
We've been offered privately twice. 1 offer was for $10,000 from someone in North Carolina, and another for $4,000 from a student. Right now none of the offers have been accepted, especially the one from the student. ???
I will definatly take some pictures within the week. I just have to borrow a digital camera from a friend to do so. I appreciate all the emails I've received and I won't let you down. The car has been on blocks and garaged and covered with 3 car covers to protect it from any elements. In fact everytime we uncover it we seem not to want to get rid of it. Time will tell. Thank you. ;)
StraightSix 12/27/2002, 10:34 AM Thanks for the pricing info, hubert. The offer amounts seem to be a bit scattered, but none seem outrageously high if the car is as you describe it. Hopefully you can get those pics soon! In the mean time, what options does it have?

Options? well it has a heater, automatic, non electri windows c6 transmission, the dual/dual exhaust/tips, the instrument cluster, dash, center console, headliner/maplights are all original. What options were available, and I'll be able to tell you if the car has it or not. :)
Please email me with pix (I don't check in here very often) and how much you want for the car. I live in Los Angeles... thanks!

68sunlitgold 12/28/2002, 12:51 PM hubert,
the options that are of interest to everyone would be things like:
A/C, tilt steering wheel, cruise control (very rare), convienence group (4 lights on center dash or on center console if you have A/C that are for parking brake on, low fuel, door open, seatbelt undone), power steering (should have if GT car), power brakes (should have if Gt car), electric clock in dash, type of radio (AM, AM/FM, AM 8-track), remote mirror, and interior decor group (woodgrain instrument panel, 2 tone door panels, door grille panels, etc).
This should give you an idea of what people will be looking for, some options are worth more than others.

68sunlitgold 12/30/2002, 04:14 PM hubert,
I forgot to ask you what the VIN # is and when was the engine redone, I only ask because it is painted Chevy orange instead of Ford Blue? Thanks
Doug

yea, I know I was pretty unhappy when my father came home w/ the rebuild. but of course that was when I was in high school, and my father didn't think anything of it from me! Engine was rebuilt back in 1987. I'll have to look up the vin# for you all.
x-codegtcs 12/30/2002, 05:33 PM Hubert,
Nice looking car to start. I have a DYING question, which no one can answer - at least yet. The good news is I think you can do it!!!!
The deluxe door strap chrome ends have the wood grain insert. I have seen different versions. Could you PLEASE take 3-4 photos up close so I can see how yours look?
thanks!
Bryce
How much are you asking for this car?
StraightSix 01/02/2003, 06:50 AM I don't believe that there is a set asking price (see some of the earlier posts), but hubert is accepting offers. However, I do have a price guide of sorts that is based on data I've collected (more accurately, it's 1998 Mustang Monthly price data calibrated for GT/CS cars in the current market). I don't have any big-block GT/CS data points yet (this car would be the first), but I do have the Mustang Monthly guidelines to help here. Based on the condition of the car in the pictures and the information that hubert has told us, my ROUGH estimate is that the car is worth around $15,000. That doesn't account for whatever value you place on knowing that you're buying from the original owner family. That may even be a bit low -- big block GT/CS cars are quite rare. They're really the closest thing to a Shelby you can get in a stock Mustang, performance-wise. They even kinda look like 'em ;)
-Winston
I have the twin to your GT/CS except with 289 cu.in & standard interior . As mine is one owner completely stock & 3000 Miles on rebuilt motor .All #s match and in collector condition but could use new candy apple paint.Would you let me know your final price, as i'm going to put mine up For Sale in the spring.
Thanks Larry
C160223 01/10/2003, 05:49 PM Hi Larry
where in BC are you?
StraightSix 01/13/2003, 08:25 PM Larry,
Be aware that around 5 grand of the value estimate I gave for hubert's car is due to the 390 engine and the GT option...

May I get some pics of your car, especially under the hood. I am restoring my 390GT/CS 4V that I traded my escort for. All the numbers match except someone pulled the engine and put in a 289.
Thank You,
Matthew Zink
What is the status on the GT/CS? I assume it is still for sale. Any other pics would be helpful at this time. Thanks.
hubert Z. 01/17/2003, 10:12 PM How you guys doing?...Well, looks like this site is really helping, also that I have a friend who works for Edelbrock here in California, who have spread the word/and pictures, accross and beyond.
This weekend I've got a total of 3 people coming from North Carolina, California, Texas. I asked for a starting bid of $13,000 which all have graciously taken. Now they're coming here Sat and Sun. It may come down to a total bid down. The car is starting to rub off on me again...Might have 2nd thoughts of selling her!...
No sale is guaranteed as of yet, but i'll let you know as time progresses. I did take more pictures of the interior and exterior and engine/trunk compartment, but I forgot the digital camera @ work. :(
From my friend from Edelbrock, he had told me not to go less than $15,000 due to the originality and present state of the car. We'll see, because this car is definately a collector prize if it does sell.
I will not be pressured into selling this car, as my father is wearily watching behind my back ;)
My father couldn't believe this site!...he starting mumbling things about this motor being a rare big block and how he had to order and wait for it from overseas from the statets to Hawaii...a lot of history on this car but I won't take anymore of your times :-X
anyways, have a good one everyone, and I'll talk to you soon.
if you have any questions you may reach me @ euro_slc@hotmail.com
68sunlitgold 01/18/2003, 08:17 AM hubertz,
you are not taking up anyones time, I am sure I speak for everyone here that we are more than happy to help you out. Everyone on this site has a passion for this car, and to find one like yours is I'm sure everyones dream (well maybe a 428 would be the ultimate ;D ). I for one am happy that you can pass this car onto someone who will take care of it and I am also jealous that the new owner will, or can ask, eveything about the car from the original owner.
I don't blame you for having second thoughts about selling the car, I have been there with my other cars. Just do what you feel is right. ;)
Good luck on the sale and keep us informed.
Doug
Oh if you get the additional pictures send them my way.
Bluestang 01/18/2003, 11:35 AM Hubert, check out my reply in X-code ? Reply #14. It may help you with pricing. Don't sell it for less than $15,000.I would ask a lot more if I was going to sell mine. You just don't see the s-codes around. Good luck!! Please let us know what it sells for. Thanks, Kimball
StraightSix 01/18/2003, 07:05 PM Bluestang, somehow I missed that post of yours in "X-Code?" the first time around. Thanks for the input. As you said, the price you paid was a steal :o.
hubert, if you end up selling the car please be sure to ask the new owner if it's okay to share sale price information with me (as long as it's still okay with you!).
Thanks,
-Winston
hubert Z. 01/19/2003, 01:04 AM Hubert, check out my reply in X-code ? Reply #14. It may help you with pricing. Don't sell it for less than $15,000.I would ask a lot more if I was going to sell mine. s-code...? I didn't know there was something like this, whats the difference and how many of these were made?...well the handle does have the wood insert with the chrome like cover on it. Man, one of my buddies tonight was pretty upset that I told him we were thinking of selling the car... if the correct asking price isn't taken, then i will keep the car and restore it completely!
Today a gentlemen and his wife came by to see the car. They couldn't believe that we were the original owners. I provided pics of the car from Hawaii...I was in 1 of them when I was a baby!!! ;D The guys who wants to remain anonymous had offered me $14,000. I told him I'd think about it and let him know. Sunday there is another person coming to check it out. He sounds interested as well. We'll just have to see right!. ;)
StraightSix 01/19/2003, 06:46 AM hubert,
S-code cars have a VIN that begins 8R01S......, and X-code cars have a VIN that begins with 8R01X......
The X designates a 390 engine with 2V carb, and the S designates a 390 engine with a 4V carb. Although the GT/CS registry numbers reflect a higher number of S-codes than X-codes (making them slightly less rare), the fact that they put out more horsepower makes them more desireable (in my opinion and others'). Which is your car?
-Winston
Bluestang 01/19/2003, 01:45 PM Hubert, according to the 68 390 GT registry there were about 215 390 GT 4-V california specials made. About evenly split between 4-speeds and automatics. You can check the web site. Out of about 4150 GT/CS this makes them very rare. 317,404 1968 mustangs were produced. Only 11,475 had the 390 motor S and X code.It is very rare to find one of these cars. Don,t sell it short. It is hard to place a value on this car. To a collector the car is gold. It ranks with some of the rarest mustangs ( including shelby's). Your car does indeed look correct. PLus with great options. Consider how many are left and orginal. I would push the limits on value. It may be worth getting appraised by a mustang club before selling. Good Luck , Kimball
