Why do people write their phone number this way?

Thanks for looking, shoot me an email or a text my number is 8 three two 7 seven 1 seven four 9 eight ill respond quickly...

I think the idea is to hide their number from automated bots that scour the internet looking for phone numbers to collect. I'm not sure what they do with these phone numbers or whether it's even a real concern. Seems like there are a million ways to collect phone numbers.
