Wow Tim, Since you are in England in 1945, finding bolts for a Lightning should not be to hard, just check in at the repair hanger. Do me a favor, pick up a couple of cases of Thompson SMGs while your there, they were part of Lend/Lease.

...'Can't think of any rear-seat P-38s that are still flying, Rob. And if there are, you'ld be packed like a sardine like those early instructors. A P-51 affords more comfort and 1800hp right in front of you with as much grace

Either ride would be a huge deal for me! My Dad fell in love with the P-38 during his stint in WWII as a 50 caliber instructor at Norman OK. They were flying over his head all the time. He loved the sound. I have a ton of books on the P-38, some from Neil of course!

I thought a few years ago one was still flying? Guess it is in retirement.

P-38, Glacier Girl was restored in Middlesboro, KY. I believe it now resides in CA. It was retrieved from an ice cap in Greenland in 1992- 50 years after a forced landing while being ferried to Europe. Google 'Glacier Girl'. Quite a story.

Yes, Glacier Girl flies regularly as do about six others. None have two seats that I know of, however...

I got the huge book on her recovery from the glacier on Greenland. What a story! My Dad enjoyed it immensely.

I knew she was to be restored, but to flying condition!!!! How cool!

My Dad loved the sound of the twin turbo charged Allison's that power those graceful birds. As I remember it was the only piston propeller plane that could sniff at the top speed of a Mustang?

The Germans called it the "Fork Tailed Devil" as I remember. It could come in as a light to medium bomber, but then fight its way out as well as anything we had!

Funny, but long before I ever imagined having an adventure with this plane, she was a regular visitor to my hometown airport fighting the war on forest fires. Here she is (same B-17) at Grass Valley around 1971
