If you have an anti freeze leak, can your rad go dry or will car most likely overheat prior to rad being empty? I'm assuming that less fluid in rad would tend to be insufficient to cool engine and thus as levels drop in rad heat gauge would move up to give notice??

How long should you wait after stopping car prior to opening cap to check levels? 1 hour? 30 minutes?

Thanks,
Stephen

If the rad is too hot to put your bare hand on, I would be reluctant to take the cap off. JMHO...

Make sure you have a couple of jugs of antifreeze in your trunk. Good luck and safe driving.

+1 on what Stangfan said. Slow coolant loss will raise the engine temp. But as long as the top tank still has water it will be negligible.
