Collector Car (Magazine) Values:

I thought you all would like to see this:

Go out and get this magazine-- "Collector Car Market Review" for August, 2005. There is a ("gasp") Orange and white Camaro Pace Car on this cover. It is a bi-monthly publication.

They list hundreds of collector cars' values, and the GT/CS and HCS are included on page 44. From "just OK" condition to Concours, which is as follows (in U.S. Dollars):

GT/CS -- 4175, 7525, 11300, 15050
HCS -- 4200, 7725, 11750, 15900
(notice the HCS cars with a slightly higher value?)

They list accessories that add more value, like +35% for a 390, wheels, console, etc.

You also have to be sharp, because a "regular" Mustang as a GT actually has more value as a CS, so a GT/CS (HCS) that is ALSO a GT should command even MORE value.

Then on page 92, they have an Auction Report, where a Gold GT/CS (no. 8R01C147818) sold at $14,900 (condition 3). The caption also mentions that the car came with "an older copy of the GT/CS Registry showing this car". They also commented: "still a good looking car with heritage".

So...GO get a copy...I got mine at a local Barnes and Noble book store. Or you can try via phone at 508-839-6707,
(fax 508-839-6266) in North Grafton, MA

No, it's not "knockin'" me, it's what's in this magazine. They tend to "average" prices. They have '62 Galaxies for $32K., etc..

They DO make the point that many cars DO get more at auction. They discuss this in detail in the front of the magazine.

If you do the math, $15K + 35% (390) = $22,500

However, I think--with about 50 or less 390 4/speed CS cars out there-- it should be a lot higher.

ALL big block (nice) Shelbys are worth $100K. So, there should be some 'trickle-down" from that to the CS and HCS.

I would also be surprised to see a concourse CS at only $15k. Driver/local show quality sounds more appropriate for $15k. I have noticed the prices going up just in the last 6-12 months. Maybe it is because Jason is cornering the market ;) Casey

Wow, I thought maybe you were talking about my car. It's Sunlitt Gold and #147881. thought maybe the numbers were transposed. Until I read the car came with a registry and the car was already in it. I added my car to the registry as it was not in it yet.

You know what they say - Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I just happen to be a beholder of a GT/CS "S" code with 4 speed and for $22,500, they can kiss my Royal Maroon A**!!! ;D Strange this particular magazine doesn't even come close to NADA prices for the 390. Think I'll keep my car. I've been offered even more than what they are putting on the car. And no Jason you can't have this one. 8)

I only posted those magazine values as a starting point, for folks to have something to work with. The low end sounds about right at $4k, etc. for those who want to get one to restore.

I don't, for a second "swear" by these particular values. There is a value with these cars that no one can measure--and I know that, because it was that "personal value" that made me write two books and do a registry for the past 20 years. So, Don, I understand your reaction.

Something is "wrong" with these values, because they are supposed to follow within a closer shadow to the '68 Shelby values. They have top condition GT-350s at $59k. A similar condition CS should be at least $30k, not $15k. BTW--'69 Conv GT-500s are listed at $89k, when Mustangs and Fords just said that ANY ("nice") big block Shelby is worth $100k.

So, go figure.

Paul N.

The only good thing about this--is for buyers who love this car to get them while they can.

Paul,

Thanks for the info on this magazine, especially the publisher's phone no. I tried several bookstores in my area, and especially several B&Ns, but they either don't carry this publication, or they ran out. :(

So, I figured that I might as well bite the bullet and contact the publisher and get it directly from him. Though I don't like having to pay a $2.00 shipping fee  , I figured I would spend that much in gas (if not more) trying to find an issue at some bookstore around here. ;)

Thanks, Arlie, but I already checked their website, and you know what?... - their web CS values are lower than the magazine CS values that Paul quoted.

Then I noticed that there is a small statement on the Home page stating that the values are from 2003. This is probably how they get the public to purchase their bi-monthly magazine. ;)

I think NADA Collector car has the most accurate prices.
$7800 low retail up to $25000 high retail without adding a lot of options.

The NADA numbers do seem to be much more realistic. I just cringe every time I see the 429 and pony interior options on their web-site, though.

Are you looking at the NADA guide for a GTCS and a 429?? I don't think the 429 was around back in '68. Also, the pony interior should probably be called deluxe interior for '68. 8)

Yep. If you go into the NADA website and pull up California Special under Collector Cars it shows a 429 as and engine option. Here is what shows up as options.

Check Applicable Options and Equipment:
302 V8 Engine
390 V8 Engine
390/265 HP V8 Engine
4 Speed Transmission
428 CJ V8 Engine
428/340 HP V8 Engine
429 V8 Engine
6 Cylinder Engine
Air Conditioning
Mustang Pony Interior
Ram Air

The 429 has always been there for as long as I can remember. I don't know why the don't remove it.

What about the 289? Why isn`t that listed? I heard the 429 was`nt a very good engine is that true? Also, am I right that the 289 was discontinued in 1968?

The 289 isn't listed (for the CS) because it is part of the base price. Note: if you look at the 302, then you add 10% to the base price, if it's a 6 cylinder, then you subtract 20%, and so on.

The 428s add even more, and NADA incorrectly lists a 429 (not available in '68 Mustangs) which would add 60% to the price!!!

Hey, maybe one could install a 429 into his CS and increase the value by 60% per NADA ;)

The 429 was a big block which was pretty fast, and the BOSS 429 (which debuted in '69) is so highly sought after, it rivals some of the higher priced Shelbys!!

The 289's last year was in '68 and only offered as a C-code (2V), with the 302 2V C-code replacing it in summer of '68.
