My tires are getting old and may need replacing in near future.....(Within 1-2 yrs at most)

What size would you go with??

205/70/14 or 215/70/14

I'm likely going to go with BFG Radial T/A with raised white lettering....

Just got P215/70R-14 BF GOODRICH RADIAL T/A's to replace the same size on the car.
Haven't mounted them yet so can't provide input on ride/handling but I'm sure others have the same.

Tires I have were on the car when I bought it back in 2007. No problems with these, they are Good Year Wingfoot HP's. Was happy with them but being pro-active on replacing. Figured 8+ year old tires probably weren't the best for highway driving that I often do with the car and close to end of their life.

I attached a side shot of my car with the 215/70R 14 tires if you want to see how they fill the wheel well.

Have 205's on the GT/CS and 215's on the convertible. Little difference and think the 205's fit well on the GT/CS

Just an around-town C code, so big fat tires made little sense to me...

The P205/70/14 is a good nominal size. 215's will work, but the 205's work well.
I did go to 15" wheels on one of my CS's, but they're a little pricey.

Neil,
Saw your old CS in above post the other week, looking better than ever, Blaine taking very good care of it.

When I bought my GT/CS, it had 60 series all around. They just looked too big on the original styled steels. My car came from the factory with E70s, so I went with the modern equivalent, the 205s. They are the BFG T/A and I think they are perfect on the classic Mustangs.

I like the 215/70/14 BFG on our 6.00" rim because it gives the sidewall a taller straighter look like the F70-14. I hate rounded bulged sidewalls and anything under 26"

With Arning drop: 26" ground to wheel well lip all around. Good stance, IMO. A bit aggressive but not slammed.

Look at the Firehawk Indy 500 tires as well (they too have raised white lettering). My experience is that they stick to the ground better. I had a spin out with my BFG Radial T/A's one day when it was just a little bit wet. No similar issues with the FIrehawks. Having said that, the BFG Radial T/A's do look slightly more like the traditional tires.

If you're buying new wheels consider 15" rims.

I have the 205s on my '68 GT with the factory chrome styled steel wheels. They work well for me, the ride is nice and they look good. I've thought about switching to a radial with the "pinstripe" white wall like the original Firestones, but I haven't been able to find one on the market yet. I think the reproduction bias ply Firestone Wide Ovals look great, but I drive my car a lot.

My vote is for P-205's. You can lower your car and they still have no tire rubbing issues.

If you are at stock height or higher you may want to consider the P-215's. They will fill the fender well better than the P-205's

Now the bad news. I just went out and tried to buy P-205's 70R 14 inch tires for a 1965 Mustang customer car. Firestone no longer offers the Firehawk raised white letter tire that I love in this size. I also looked for Radial TA's. No joy in this size. P-215 Radial TA's where available I think?

Coker Tire: https://www.cokertire.com/ offers vintage tires, but get your wallet out. They be spendy. If you move up to a 15 inch rim the selection widens. But with the large diameter wheels being all the vogue, 14 inch offerings are getting very scarce.

If someone has a line on Radial TA's or Firehawks I would like to know where. Maybe some old ones on the shelf?

So, not to hijack this threat, but I have a set of 15" Crager rims (65 Shelby style). What size would you recommend for those? I was thinking 225 60 15. I may reconsider and go with to 215 60 15 if there might be clearance problems up front. Since it will be an unusual look, I want the set up to have a little attitude.

This is what I am looking at (ignore the 30 year old drag slicks currently mounted on them).

I put Speedway 350s on 15s on a '68 Shelby-ized coupe. E70-15 which comes close to a P215/70-15

Tire OD Section Width Tread Width
350s 26.73" 8.40" 6.63"
215/70-15 26.9" 8.70" n/a

225-60-15 27.4" 9.00" n/a

So the 225s are tad taller and a bit wider in section, with the proper backspacing and springs they should be OK.

The 350s;

The front springs were changed to raise the fender about 1.5" from where it was shown here with the first set, way too low....
