Okay everyone, I've been reading for awhile so I'd thought I'd tell everyone about my GT/CS. Currently being restored. Going to be tank stripped and e-coated soon. Most of the body panels already blasted and primed. The car was complete, unmolested and mostly rust free when I bought it 4 years a go but the paint and battery apron were toast and there was some old body work that needed to be redone correctly. I cruised a few years with it (Woodward Dream cruise just 1 mile away : ), and now it's gettin done for next summer. The car will be kept original, except for some period correct engine mods. T-code candy apple red, 289, auto, PS, PB, black deluxe interior, remote driver mirror, and GT center caps.

Well, Thanks for reading, I am really looking forward to having this beauty done. I will post some before and during pics this summer, and some finished pics next spring.

Mind if I ask what your estimate on the completed project will set you back $$?

Trying to prepare myself for the future.

Cory,

The car was $4,500. I put a about 500 into it to make it road worthy. It was sitting for years so the brakes carb, and gas tank needed to be replaced.

The paint stripping I did myself with a borrowed pressure blaster, so materials for that was about $150

Tank stripping and e-coating the unit body will be approx $2,800

My friend is doing the body work and paint for $3,500 (that is my deal in this whole process)

I am going to rebuild the trans, but not the engine. when the car body is out of the garage, all the small brkts, suspension parts, etc. will be blasted and painted. I have a TP tools top load 780 cabinet for that. ( highly recommended )

The interior doesn't need much, but I will need bumpers and some odds and ends. I figure about $13,500 to $14,000 when all is done and said, which should be close what i could sell it for. ( I will be keeping it though ) It could be done for less without the tank stripping but I want this car to be rust free everywhere. Here in Michigan you really learn to HATE rust! Doing 80% of the work myself also helps with the savings. All of these costs have been spread out over the years so the financial bite is a little easier to take.

Jay,
I would love to see some picture before, during and after the restoration!! I thinks it's great that you are doing alot of the work yourself, I too plan to do alot to save on money. I want to tank strip my car, I have looked for a place around my folks place but have not found one.....is there a certain name it is officially called or is "tank stripping" it? Thanks

That's not to bad at all. A new car for 14-15 thousand in this day and age is pretty lucrative. A new-old car with some class, style and oooomph. Well that just sounds more than worth it.

Thanks for the insight.

Doug,

Go to www.ecoatking.com it is a place in belleville MI that does the process. I have gone online to try and find a company that will do it cheaper, but couldn't find the right key words to get where I wanted to go. Hopefully this website will help. I have found a company that strips and doesn't e-coat, it is much cheaper but the tank size is only up to 13ft. and they don't have a website. The tanks around here are up to 13ft for small tanks, 13 to 19ft for the large tanks, my Mustang unit body is 14.6ft. I am still looking around and will post my findings. I prefer not to blast the unit body because I want ALL the rust gone, in the A pillars, cowl, seat bases, etc. I will take some pics of the car soon, it is in a visqueen tent in my garage for blasting dust control (what a mess!!).

what a small world. i live in belleville michigan and my friend's cousin owns the e-coating shop you mentioned. i don't know him personally but was told he is the only guy in this area that does this type of work. his shop is about 3 miles from my house. my gtcs is in for body work and paint right now at a shop in wayne mi. if all goes well i should be ready for the woodward dream cruise too. are you going to paint it the same red? mine is red right now but an going back to the original presidential blue. i'll watch for you. don't see many gtcs cars in michigan.
can anyone tell me if all 68 mustang came with the rear bumper guards? i see some cars with them, and some without. if they all didn't have these, would these be listed on your MARTI report? and also how would you know if they were chrome or color keyed to the body color? if anybody could help me out on this it would be appreciated.

thanks

Tom,
If your car had them, the front ones are always chrome and the back ones where body color with a rubber strip down the middle. As for if your car had them or not, the Marti report will not tell you, however it was one of those strike deleted items. When was your car actually produced? It sould be around the time of the change over with rear quaters reflectors, lower dash pad and pillar pads sometime in Feb-Apr. These changes did not all happen at the same time, some parts ran out before others did so all the changes did not happen concurrently. My 68 coupe has a actually build date of 22 Feb and has the new reflecters and no pads but DOES have front chrome bumper guards and body color rear. The GT/CS has an actual build date of 29 Feb and has neither the front or rear, now remember my car was in a front end collision before I got it, so the front bumpers could have been discarded. I hope this helps you.

Tom,

Yes my car will be staying candy apple red. I won't be ready for this years cruise but definitely next year. My friend owns a business at 12 and woodward his landlord lets him have the parking lot so he always reserves a spot for me front and center, I also have family at 12 1/2 and woodward so there is no shortage of places to hang. We should keep in touch, especially for next years cruise, it would be real cool to have a contingent of California Specials all cruising together. I wanted to find some old wooden surfboards to put on the roof and play it up like I'm a beach bum from the late sixties. I just love this stuff!!!

Tom,

Small world. We sit in front of the jewelry store just across woodward, next to the Ford used car lot. I remember last year pointing out a blue GT/CS to my girlfriend to show her what my car looks like, must have been you. At this years cruise I will stop by to check out your car.

Dave,

In August we can start a thread where people can post there locations, cell phone numbers, and possibly even a meeting place with a time window so we can all get together and check out our cars in person. Even though my car won't be ready until 2004, checking out all of your GT/CS's will give me ideas, and help me keep my car original.

my car wasn't there last year (still sitting in my garage in pieces) but i know which one you're talking about. i stopped and talked to the guy about his car. i would love to get together and see everybody's cars.
as for the ford 100 year anniversary, i will be there but my car won't be ready yet. did anybody out there submit their cars for display? i think you had to have the applications in by mid april. you had to be chosen by a panel to display your car. should be quite an event.
