REAL 1968 California Special (GT/CS) with original fiberglass, one of 4118 per Marti Report. Extensive bumper to bumper renovation with many mechanical upgrades. Restoration completed in 2014 with less than 4000 miles since. Beautiful Royal Maroon exterior with matching custom full leather and ultrasuede interior. Body media blasted to bare metal, only minor rust repairs necessary. The clear coat paint was recently corrected and ceramic coated. Third owner, all of her life has been in the western US. Original block and crank 289 were rebuilt with new RHS 180 aluminum heads, Edelbrock 2-plane manifold, Comp XE268H cam, MSD ignition and fuel injection. Fuel system replaced with Aeromotive Stealth tank with in-tank pump and Aeromotive braided PTFE lines. Ron Davis Radiator with dual fans keeps everything cool. JBA shorty headers with full 2.5" SS exhaust. C4 transmission replaced with newly rebuilt Ford 4R70W with electronic lock-up Precision Industries torque converter. Custom aluminum Arizona Driveshaft connects to a period correct Ford 9" with 3.50 gears and an Auburn limited slip differential. Rides on California Pony Cars Shelby 10-spoke replicas in 17x8 size with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. Subframe connectors stiffen the unibody, while boxed front control arms with precision bearings eliminate the normal creaking and binding in Mustang front suspension. Bilstein shocks and new springs front and rear, along with Shelby-style traction bars results in a smooth, responsive ride. The factory power discs are retained, with new pads, rotors and while the calipers were cleaned and new seals and pistons installed. Original blower/heater/AC including dampers were all rebuilt with new heater core and evaporator sized for 134a. Ducts and registers are installed, car is ready for new compressor (included but not installed).
The Pony-pattern interior features leather color matched to the Royal Maroon and Bone paint on the metal parts. Original seats were completely torn down, repaired, and powder coated prior to installing the new foams and leather covers. Custom ultrasuede headliner in Bone, uses original headliner metal bows. Dynamat installed throughout interior. Custom floor carpets were crafted to better match the Royal Maroon. All work was done by Interstate Custom Interiors of Chandler, AZ.
All glass original except for windshield. Door window trim, rain gutter trim, inside and outside door handles, rear window trim all original as is floor shifter. Multiple volumes of receipts from restoration, engine build notes, tuning notes, original shop manual, as well as manuals for all new hardware included. Also have nearly half a gigabyte of photos of the build.
