We reached a major milestone with the restoration last week - the sheet metal work has been completed and the car is now mounted on the rotisserie for final welding. The car looked greta with al the doors, fenders, trunk lid and hood fitted - and no rust anywhere!!!

Congrats Gary!
I know how you feel. I am going to see our HCS Saturday and all the metal repair is to be done as well. How much are you going to have to pay for the body filler and paint work? The guys that have our car said that it would cost around 18K. I almost fell off my chair. I think they need to knock off about 10K off that price or I may be pulling it out and looking for a differnt shop. Marty

Wow, I would have to agree, 18K if the entire thing was rusted and needed all new panels, doors and floors maybe, I say maybe, but general body and paint seems outrageous. You could buy an entire finished car in decent condition for that.

Looks good Gary, congrats, and keep up the good work, only 10 months to Spokane International.

Marty, I believe it is more expensive to do paint and body work in Canada, than in USA. Guess it depends on how hungry the shop is. It will be interesting to see Gary's reply.

Metric, I don't think so! Maybe it's the metric dollar?
Just a fact of life for us poor Canucks that we pay more for every thing; cars, gas, groceries, car repairs and auto body to name a few.

That looks exciting, and sure expensive. But she'll be just the way you want her when done! I snagged my car from Arizona and had no rust. But the heat/sun took it's toll on upholstery and dash etc. I did end up having a complete resoration job, and actully did find some plastic in the left rear quarter. Once she's fixed...........should be all fun>

I think $18k sounds high to block and paint - I think it will be about $10k -$12k to do mine.

It can be done cheaper but I did this for long term ownership and not just to turn it over for profit. I won't get my money back on this car, and it was never my intent anyway - this is my keeper!

When I saw the car assembled last week I was ready to drag it home, throw in the drive train and take it for a spin. I guess I'll have to wait

Thanks guys for the input. This one is our keeper too. I have done nothing so far on the cheep but hate to be taken. I keep telling my self I could almost buy a 2010 base model Mustang for 18K and it is painted. I think if I remember right Tim and his son TJ painted his car for $800. I am tempted to try it my self. Sorry Gary for hijacking your thread. Marty

Hey Marty!
I just spoke to TJ who said he'd paint your car for only $10K !!!
;-)

Yes, the $800 was for paint & materials, but we did a solid week of priming, sanding and only minor dent repair w/ no rust. We both learned a lot and it came out great as a high school "driver", but as far as acceptable standards - I would never consider painting a "correct" car myself.
Still - $18K seems way over the top!

Gary - your progress looks awesome!

Tell TJ if he ever wants to spend a couple of weeks in Idaho and visit Yellowstone NP, Grand Teton NP, Float and fish the Henry's Fork, camp with the Grizzly bears etc I have a spare room or rv with full amenities and a CS that needs painted and a new shop to work in.

P.S. I worked in a body shop for a few year many moons ago and I'm willing to help.

Should clarify that i was considering more body work, as that is the usual case up here, a fair amount of body work. Just blocking, paint, $10k is probably the norm. Power polish will run another thou.
