Ok, so I have a HUGE debt to pay forward (thanks Arlie, you rock!) so I'll pass on the one little tip I remember as being "mine" about GT/CS resto. If you poke around on fleaBay or electronics surplus houses grab yourself a couple of the old 8.5" floppy disks from the late 70's early 80's. Trace the shape of the scoop grille on it, poke the two holes and voila! a perfect backing. I dunno how picky concourse judges might get about this, but the plastic the disk was made of has just the right "not too glossy/not too flat" look, it shouldn't ever shrink like vinyl tapes might, and the stipled texture makes it look as factory as one can expect.
