I poked around at all the trunk wiring and a the back of the ignition switch, started the car, turned on the lights and everything worked; then it didn't work; then one taillight bulb lit; then it went out. Since I played around with both the trunk wiring and the ignition switch I don't know...

I think it was manual and the kid started it in gear. It's probably a good thing it was in 1st and not reverse. It could be an interesting fight with the home owner insruance company to pay for the car damage since the auto insurance company probably won't pay for it.
