This 1968 Ford Mustang GT coupe was first delivered to Pauls Ford Sales Inc. in Kansas City, Missouri, and is one of 4,118 examples ordered with the California Special equipment package. Acquired by the seller in 1988, the car was subsequently refurbished with work involving a repaint in black with red side stripes and a refresh of the interior in red vinyl. Power is provided by a replacement 302ci V8 paired with a four-speed manual transmission, and additional equipment includes a limited-slip rear axle, a scooped hood, a rear spoiler, power steering, front disc brakes, air conditioning, and a push-button AM/FM radio. The car was sold in 1993 and reacquired by the seller in 2014, after which the brake primary cylinder and valve covers were replaced, the radiator was flushed, and various engine components were cleaned. This Mustang GT California Special coupe is now offered with a Deluxe Marti report, partial service records, a copy of the window sticker, and a clean Georgia title in the name of the seller and their spouse.
The car is said to have been refinished in Raven Black with red side stripes in 1988, and rust on the right-rear quarter panel was repaired in 1993. The GT/CS package included driving lamps, hood vents, exposed hood locks, faux side scoops, and “California Special” emblems on the rear quarter panels along with Thunderbird-sourced taillights, concealed exhaust outlets, and a fiberglass decklid with an integrated rear spoiler. The right side mirror is missing its glass.
Steel 15” wheels wear polished hubcaps with trim rings and are mounted with Goodyear Speedway 350 E70-15 tires. A pair of non-matching spare wheels is housed in the trunk compartment. The car is equipped with power steering, and braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums. Service performed in January 2016 by R&A Motorsports of Lees Summit, Missouri, involved overhauling the brake pedal assembly and replacing the brake master cylinder, junction block, and front lines.
The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench that have been re-trimmed in red vinyl upholstery with textured inserts and are accompanied by a color-coordinated dashboard, headliner, door panels, and carpets. Woodgrain trim adorns the dash, and additional appointments include air conditioning, vent windows, rubber floor mats, and a push-button AM/FM radio. The shifter assembly was overhauled in January 2016.
The wood-rimmed tilt-away steering wheel features a chrome horn ring and fronts a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer, a clock, and gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 102 miles, and total mileage is unknown.
A replacement 302ci V8 was fitted during the 1980’s refurbishment and is equipped with a dual sport exhaust system with quad outlets. Work completed in February 2016 involved replacing the valve covers and gaskets, flushing the radiator, refinishing the air cleaner in blue, and cleaning various engine and clutch components.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip rear axle. Additional underside images are presented in the gallery below.
The Deluxe Marti report lists a build date of June 20th, 1968, as well as factory colors, equipment, and production statistics.
The Georgia title is listed as a duplicate.
