Car History

The Mustang is known as the original Pony Car and are highly sought-after collectibles in every corner of the world. We have a very special 1968 Ford Mustang Coupe California Special here at Adventure Classics with the original California Black plates, matching numbers rebuilt 289 CI engine, one repaint and even has all kind of documentation including the original window sticker, warranty cards and booklets, documented in California Special Registry, featured in Patrick Covert's Ultimate Mustang book, with receipts dating back to 1968, a Deluxe Marti Report, and the Owner's manual!

The California Special was based on a prototype Shelby coupe that was never built. However, the look was a hit, and all the fiberglass add-ons, particularly the rear clip that's definitely got a Shelby look were part of the package.

Mechanical

Our Mustang came with the matching numbers rebuilt 289 cubic inch engine from the factory with air conditioning, the correct Ford Blue painted valve covers block, heads, intake, and air cleaner assembly, power steering and power disc brakes.

This engine sits in the very clean, painted, and detailed engine compartment with new hoses, belts, and spark plug wires.
A smooth shifting C4 3-speed automatic transmission sends the power out back to the Ford rear end puts the power down thru the dual exhaust system with quad tips while it rides on the factory Shelby looking styled steel wheels and black sidewall performance tires.

Interior

The Ivy Gold interior is in incredible shape and has bucket seats with the shifter on the floor in the factory console. The matching rear seats are Ivy Gold vinyl to make It really pop.

It has matching dash and door panels with a factory steering wheel, gauges appear to be original and in excellent condition, radio, carpeting and seat belts too.

Exterior

This particular CS comes in an extremely rare and unusual color combination of Lime Gold and it looks fantastic after a full repaint as it flows over the Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT500 looking rear spoiler, rear quarter panel scoops, and rear taillights, as well as the blacked out front grill and fog lights.

All the correct California Special bits are still present and accounted for, ranging from the hood pins to the Shelby-style rear scoops and fiberglass tail with built-in spoiler. This is a very special Mustang with the correct GT/CS stripes run down its flanks.

Conclusion

This 1968 Mustang California Special is one of those rare pieces that seems to have escaped the notice of collectors, but that's changing. Its unique look combines Shelby components with good parts bin engineering makes the California Special worthy of A-list status in the Mustang world.

If you are looking for an attention getting bright red Mustang, stop searching. This great California Special 1968 Ford Mustang here at Adventure Classics today is the right one for you.

This was (or is) Dave & Heather Percy's (our special) car, from Newfoundland. They last posted in 2014.

Update:
It looks like Heather passed away in June and Dave preceded her.

Very nice looking car. I'm sure it was their pride and joy.

Does anyone know where one can acquire a horn pad like that to install a CS badge like that? What kind of cars have that horn pad?
