1968 Mustang C/S Original "California Special" in perfect condition.

One of the most obscure and rare, of the Mustang models, is the Ford Mustang California Special. Between February 17 and July 30 of 1968, the San Jose California plant turned out some 4,118 California Specials. Given the build location, all GT/CS VINs begin with the sequence "8R01." This specific one is #8R01C143613 and shipped on 2/26/1968.

Shelby American had a hand in designing the GT/CS appearance package that included stripes, badging, and some fiberglass add-on parts.
The GT/CS option added 2 tone seats, unique floor mats, side stripes (with GT/CS behind the front wheel RH and LH), side scoops (behind doors), 18" polished aluminum wheels, rolled exhaust tips, faux gas cap (with words "California Special"), lowered front bumper/valance and Shelby style rear.
Unlike the side scoops, the vented louvers in the hood are functional, allowing heat to escape. The hood is held down by DZUS-type hood locks. At the front of the car, the usual "corralled mustang" in the center of the all-black grille got the eviction notice for the GT/ CS. Instead of the shiny horse in the center, the grille features a pair of rectangular Lucas fog lamps. Ford also installed an extra-large gas cap, similar to the ones used on the GT and Shelby models, with a running mustang on it.

Contrasting body stripes are part of the package. The triple stripes—thin lines on top and bottom of a much thicker stripe—start at the front fender and end at the quarter-panel scoops. The "GT/ CS" badging appears in body color as a cutout, or negative, lettering on the scoops, like a stencil. Cursive-script "California Special" badges are cast in metal and screwed on each rear quarter panel.

This car is an original California car that went through a complete ground up restoration about 6 years ago and is spotless inside and out. A show winner over and over again with over $60k invested. Spotless paint, full documentation, custom California Cover, and many extras are included.

Beautiful CS. (Looks like they used a lot of Gloss Black where it shouldn't be.) I couldn't tell if the exterior is Presidential Blue from the photos.

Looks pretty nice. Those front tires look very large to me given their stance in the fender wheel well. Guess the restorer did not want the trunk lid stripes.

Looks great, but got to agree with Dad on this one!! Too much gloss back! Bet it sells though as it looks very well finished.
