1968 289 is really a 302?

OK my new project codes out as a 289 but it is really a 302 the SN on the block matches the Vin number on the title or the vin plate.

Anyone explain this to me?

The car was built in March of 1968

I just ran into the same issue on my C code. The block has 302 cast into the valley. Ford ran out of 289 blocks in 1968. They used 302 blocks and built them with 289 internals. My machine shop checked the crank and it is a 289 crank. Unfortunately, my engine is not the original one to my car, even though it is a correct 289. Check the area just below the intake manifold on the driver's side at the back of the engine. Your vin # should be stamped onto the horizontal surface facing up.

as early as May 1967, Ford began casting the C8OE block and using them to build 289's. This is pretty common. I would be surprised if any "289" blocks were even used in the 68 production.

Here is a photo of a May 10 1967 cast C8OE block...I have seen a couple with May 67 cast dates.

I got my block on the stand tonight and re verified it is a numbers matching block! so stoked! Thanks for the help I was a bit perplexed of why the car coded as a 289 with a 302....

My Block is stamped 302 and my vin # is stamped in it too... build date is March also on my c code GTCS.
