1968 68 GT/CS - 289 Motor Question

last weekend I pulled the motor on the my 68 Mustang GT/CS. Even though it did start after sitting for 15 years, I wanted to take it a part and check it well.

The Vin # indicates C1 for a 289 2V motor. However, when I pulled the intake manifold from the block I noticed a 302 casting numbers between the lifter openings. The heads are stamped 289 and do have 2 valves.

does anyone know why my Block would have 302 on it when it should be a 289 block? could all the motors use a 302 block but have different heads?

I did confirm the vin numbers match the ID numbers stanped on the Block.

Please comment.

Thanks, Dennis

1968 was a change over year for engines, where both 289's and 302's were used. It was the last year for the 289 and the first for the 302. I've read that as the supply of 289 blocks ran out, 302 blocks were used in their place. I think we've discussed it here before but can't remember for sure. Maybe someone else has the link.

Thanks for the comments, insight and link as to why my block is stamped 302 and C8AE-6015-B even though it is a 289.

It's nice to have such a knowledgeable group here available for any question I have.

Thanks!
Dennis
