I am considering buying a 68 gt/cs that came from the factory with a 6 cylinder 3 spd but during restoration it was upgraded to a 351 Cleveland with a 4 speed. The guy has the original motor & transmission that will be included in the price of the car. I have looked at the warranty tag & it also has the vin # on it. The numbers are right for what he says it is. I have searched the internet to find out where the vin # should be & I am getting conflicting stories. Can someone please tell me where to look? Anyone know the value of these cars? This one has 186 miles on the rebuilt 351 cleveland. Interior completely restored. Very nice looking car... ???

The VIN should be on the driver's door, on the dash pad on the passenger side (you must read it by looking through the windshield) and under one or both front fenders. The problem with the one under the fenders is that you must remove the fender to see it. The VIN may or may not be on the engine block. I know it was on my 289 but I don't know about the 6 cylinder cars.

If you can post some pictures and give us a little more information about the car we should be able to get an interesting discussion going about the value. Nothing we like better. Well, almost nothing.

csrookie,
The Vin # is in a couple of locations:
- passenger side of the dash in the bottom corner of the window (look from the outside of the car on the passenger side and look in the lower corner) If the interior has been redone and the dash pad replaced/taken out, the tag can sometime be under the pad.
- on the driver side fender (on cars built in the San Jose plant this # is hidden by the fender). It was suppose to be located where the "notch" is in the fender, but the stamping was mis-placed and the # are further under the fender.
- on the back of the original block (not sure on I6 engines)
- also on the door tags as you stated.

Hope this helps

Doug

Here is what seems to be an excellent example of a 6 cylinder GT/CS. The bidding went up to $10K but the reserve was not met.

If everything was changed out when the conversion was made I think you would be better off leaving in the current drive train. I'm willing to bet that a properly converted car with 351 and a 4-speed is worh more, and more fun, than a numbers matching 6-cylinder. "Everything" would include such things as the (I'm guessing on some of these) front springs, wheel hubs and brakes, drive line, maybe the rear end and whatever else needs to be beefed up.

Now if you really want to go with a 6 cylinder may I suggest....... Oops sorry gang. It almost slipped. :-X

Here are pictures of all three VIN locations with the first being the window, second the door, third the engine and the last the fender (note I had to take the fender bolts off and scrape the sealant off to see it).

How do I go to the registry, enter my vin# & verify it? Also, we are rookies but from what we understand, in 1968, the san jose plant built the cs & the hc only, is this correct? We are trying to confirm this car is a true CS. The vin starts with 8R01T. Thanks for all your help.

oops. I used the door tag above not your vin #.

give me your VIN # and I will see if it is in the registries. I have the printed version of both registries. The beginning 4 spaces of your VIN is perfect for CS and HCS cars. All must have those numbers since they ALL came from the San Jose plant.
