I got a call from a friend saying he saw a CS 4 sale..so i went and checked it out.

18000 obo says the sign and the vin is 8R01C150342.

I met the guy who is selling it, his name is Tommy and the car has been in San Francisco the last 5 years but now it is in Southern California.

The reason the guy is selling it is because he needs the $$. he says the car runs great.

I think its in really good shape...doesnt appear to have been in any major accidents. The paint job is not flawless, but it is way better than the body/paint condition of my CS.

The color is an off white original color that i cant remember the name of and it has black stripes.

The engine has been rebuilt to a 302 stock with the exception of some shorty headers.
C4 transmission.
I looked under the car, it has subframe connectors and the unibody is in great shape. The interior (black) has been redone and looks great.
It does not have Air Conditioning.
It has a grant steering wheel.
It has Marchal Foglamps.

The wheels are 17" with 245 tires, but the original GT hubcaps also come with the car.

The car also has an alarm.

Im trying to do Tommy a favor by helping him sell this car to someone who really wants a California Special. Tommy had not heard of this website, but i told him i would post this to help him sell his car. He is a really nice guy and the car appears to be a genuine 68GTCS.

Check out the pictures and give him a call if your interested

The Marchals were original equipment in the beginning. They were recalled during the '68 model year and replaced with the Lucas lights. The Lucas lights were then used as original equipment on GT/CSs that were built later in the year.
Only early GT/CSs should have the Marchals.

Unless during the recall, the owner took the car with Marchals back to the dealer and had them replaced with Lucas lights and then those could be considered original too, right?

Why were they recalled? And If they were recalled, why would you want to drive around in a car that has lights with a problem?

I think the state of California deemed them to be too bright for safety reasons.

... That's correct, California Highway Safety Std's were stricter back then it seems ... they were also responsible for '67 Shelbys mounting the grille foglights a little further apart (compared to the earlier/49 state configuration where they were close together in the center of the grille) ...

Since I'm a newbie to the original CS's, what is the significance of the Marchal fog lights?

And the most important fact. The Marchals are way better looking than Lucas, both in how they mount and the light has a much more distinguished look than the flat lensed Lucas. But then maybe I'm biased having Marchals. ;)

I think what had the CHP, and the State of Calif concerned, was that the Marchals had the potential of using a much, much brighter, higher wattage bulb that would make them so bright, you could use them to land a 747 Jetliner!!!

There was no real "Bureau of Automotive Repair" in 1967-68 to check these things out, since this was the first production car (with the '68 Shelby) to use real fog lights. The CHP had one guy responsible to look at things like this, and it was pretty subjective.

The Shelby folks got called in to Sacramento (Capitol) to explain why they used these lights, as well as why the '67 Shelby had center-mounted bright beams--as well as the upper side scoop blinkers. I think the State was caught off guard by all of this, and was all P.O.'d about it....

BTW--these same Marchals were used on the early GT-40s.
