I am looking to replace the am radio with a period correct am-fm radio that will fit into my console. I know that I will need different knobs to fit with the console, but I have read that the radio has 2 different sizes and that I need the size that will fit the console. There is what is called a big box, and a short box radio. Does anyone know what size I need to fit the padded console. Thanks for any help.

Interested in any answer you get for this...as I currently have a philco am-fm radio in my gt/cs. It looks period correct but id like to confirm. Small gaps exist behind the knobs though.

I have never heard of any difference in console radios vs non-console. Yes the knobs are different, and the rear radio attachment brackets are different; but never heard of different "boxes".

Unless your Marti report calls out the optional AM/FM Stereo; I wouldn't waste the money. The sound quality of factory units is terrible compared to a modern system. I would send your current AM radio out to one of many venders who "upgrade" the original box with modern internals. You can have the appearance of a factory AM radio with FM Stereo and even MP3 inputs.

Were you planning on using factory door speakers or installing 6x9's on the rear deck?

It's just that I have seen some radios for sale that have said that the radio might not fit cars with air or not fit consoles because of the bigger case of the radio. I have also seen them listed as smaller case radios. Just wondering what the difference is. I did purchase a am-fm ford radio with new internals. Haven't hooked it up yet. The person said it was for a Cougar or Mustang console. Thanks for your reply.

Did you check out www.rediscoverradio.com They have some information on there.
I have redirad in my car with the factory am radio and use my Ipod mostly until I get more music on my phone. I put it in the glove box.

After having really bad experiences with Custom Auto Sound products, I got one of the rediscover radio units and use it in our '66 conv. I love it.

Shoot, in a convertible ya don't need a good radio, just a loud one!

Have fun, Dave

'67 thru '73 AM/FM's will fit & work. As you already know, the knobs are peculiar for the console bezel. I've found the AM/FM's on E-Bay from $99 to $250. No big deal- unless you insist on the exact '68 dial/buttons.

Thanks for the help. Found a radio that will fit a console. Just need a set of new knobs. Person said it was a Small Case radio that will fit a car with air and or a console. Could be filling me full of crap, but I have been trying to find out about what the difference is about small and large case mustang radios.68sunlitgold, thanks for the info with NPD.
