Carpet Installation

I've been installing new carpet in my '68 conv. I'm not a happy camper with the quality & fit. Unfortunately, there seems to be only one source for all the retailers. So if anyone is contemplating installing new carpet, be ready for a big job of fitting, steaming, trimming. You'd think that after all these years of production, they'd have the process pretty well down pat. Not true. Fit is extremely poor.

Hey Neil: I didn't have such a big problem when I carpeted mine. Maybe I just got lucky. The only problem I remember was the hole cut out for the high beam foot switch. I too think the carpet quality is poor, but it's probably at least as good as what Ford originally put in it.

Your's had a hole cutout for the dimmer sw? This one didn't. The REALLY bad fit is on the driveshaft hump just aft of the gear selector. It's WAY too excessive, even with the convertible doubler plate on top of the floorpan. I'll work on it some more tomorrow, but I don't hold too much hope for a nice sanitary fit. Does anyone else beside Auto Custom Carpet sell carpet??

No, there wasn't a dimmer switch hole. I had to cut that out and that was the main issue I had. I probably avoided some of your headaches because I have a center console, and this hides some of the imperfections.

I sent "an unhappy email" to Auto Custom Carpets last nite. Today I spoke with a guy in SC (StockInteriors.com) and he told me there are only two mfr's for these carpets (Auto Custom Carpets & Trim Parts). He felt ACC was a better product, having sold 30+ this year with no complaints. Soooo, I ordered another carpet set (ACC) and I'll see how that goes. The new set I already have will find its way into the dumpster.

Neil, I feel your pain. ACC lacks miles of making someting that is close to OEM quality and fit. They did, long ago, make a superior fitting product, but they somehow have managed to lose the handle. ADD also bought out the only competition they had (ACS) so it is correct that they are the best source. Sadly their product could stand a lot of improvement. They are now using a product called "RAYLON" which may be better, but the jury is still out on that. I had issues with their product and tried several sets before finally getting a carpet they can supply called "mass backed". It is more expensive, but fit much better. The issue of "fuzzy" may not have been solved, not sure yet on that. NPD worked hard to satisfy me, right to the top of the ladder. They went far beyond what I expected. One of the VPs at ACC also did all he could to help me get a passable product, and if you send me a PM I will give you his contact info. Virginia Mustang Supply is aware of the "mass backed" and will not think you are "some kind of a nut" if you call them about it, as well as NPD. We all had higher expectations but so far pretty much the same product. NPD will have a stock of the "RAYLON" but you may have to insist, and end up talking to Scott Halseth to get it if the order taker is not up to speed. You will find a long discussion of the carpet problems in the HIPO EXCHANGE forum, and some new information about the RAYLON in the Vintage Mustang Forums. Rest assured that you are not alone in your disappointment with the ACC carpet. Send me a PM if you have questions about who to contact at ACC in order to bitch - I am on a first name basis with him, and he really did give me all the help, and probably more, that he could.

Thanks for the info. I've ordered another set (ACC) and I'll see how it goes. If necessary, I'll take you up on your offer.
