Here are the 5 cameras I narrowed my search to for a small, fairly inexpensive, point-&-shoot 6mp digital camera with good picture quality.

The prices are from Abe's of Maine. Most of the data came from reviews on www.dcresource.com.

Canon SD550 7mp $287 (great flash 16', terrible battery life - 150 shots)
Sony W50 6mp $232 (good battery life)
Nikon P4 8mp $312 (anti-shake, weak battery) P3 has wireless downloading
Nikon L1 6mp $195 (kind of thick - 2")
Casio EX-Z600 6mp $245 (extremely thin, anti-shake, big screen, great battery life, terrible flash 9')

Any recommendations on a good camera would be greatly appreciated

Arlie,

One thing you might want to check on is the zoom feature quality: is it just digital technology, or is it digital and lens? If the lens is very simple, then your picture quality may be limited; however, if you have a fancier lens (or detachable), then you may be able to achieve 35mm type quality ...

Most of the cameras of this type (skinny) can't pack in much more than a 3x zoom so the supplement that with a 4x digital zoom, for a total (more or less) of 12x. From what I've read zooming digitally can create poor results so the zoom options are quite limited.

... right, that's why I've been told by some professional photographers to research the lens quality/capabilities ... but it all boils down to what are your needs and desires, and sometimes you have to understand the tradeoffs ... by the way, with a "better" lens capability, you can sometimes sacrifice on the MP, unless you have plans to do big prints or blow-ups ...

How does one research the lens quality? Is there some measurable standard?

One thing to look for is a reputable camera name. Some camera names have a better reputation than others, especially when it comes to lens craftsmanship. In this day and age, with digital cameras and the electronic technology, it's pretty easy to replicate good quality among the different brand names, but if a mechanical or optical part or assembly is involved, some are better than others. Again, if compactness is very high on your list, this is a feature that may be sacrificed if you decide to go with better lens quality ... I'm happy with my little (not so little) Minolta that I purchased at Costco awhile ago, it wasn't super high on the MP, but it has a great lens and a neat video feature that allows me to leave the video camera at home ...

I've been looking for a bit and the ones I'm more interested in are 10-12X regular zoom, without the digital. I'm not as concerned with the size as I am with the picture quality and the digital zoom doesn't look good, from my point of view. Thanks Arlie for the info so far though. I'll go to the website you provided and see if I can find something right for me. Anyone have an idea which battery type is most likely to be around for a while?

About 9 months ago I bought a Canon PowerShot S4400 Digital ELPH based on the reviews at cnet.com

http://reviews.cnet.com/2001-1_7-0.html?tag=hd_ts

I like its size. 5Mpixel. Good optical zoom. Has a replaceable/rechargable battery so you can carry a spare. Seems to take good pictures - no complaints so far. I *think* I paid around $250 for it.

I bought some Sony camera about 4-5 months ago. That $%#& thing messed up a few times so I put a .45 caliber hole through it. Now I have my wife's hand me down camera. It has been working so it probably won't get lead poisoning like the other one contracted.

I just bought a Panasonic DMC-TZ1. It's a 5 MP, 10X optical zoom, and supposedly has great battery life and flash. I will let you know as I use it, but I did get a couple of pics of my CS with it today.
