Head Lights...and all other lights "surging"

Hi all,

I have an issue with the CS. The lights "surge" (get a little brighter and then dimmer...oscillating) in rythm with the idle of the car. It's done this since I've owned the car (almost two years). Is this normal? If not, what part(s) could be the culprit?

Thanks, Jeff

When was the last time you replaced the voltage regulator? Could also be the headlight switch is on its way out.

I think thats just the way they are supposed to be because of the alternators.

My car does that too. It's kind of embarrassing driving around with blinking lights. :embarass: I also was wondering what causes that. Thanx Don, I'll check that out. Those parts are cheap enough to replace.

When you have six taillights, the amp draw is going to be a bit more. I agree, it could be the voltage regulator, and/or a loose alternator belt, or alternator going out (one more diode to go!).

Sometimes if the wiring is bad, or if it's grounding, it will put a draw on the circuit, and make it surge. The alternator has to compensate for any problems.

My hope is that we all go over our wiring together at once--from the new book. There are many small things that can add up.

It's not normal for the lights to "surge". It could be a number of things causing it. One is blown diodes in the alternator. Take the alternator in to have it tested. If you have to replace it, go for one with a higher amp. rating, since lots of us put stereo's and misc. gadgets in the cars that pull more power. It may also be a bad voltage regulator. If you replace the regulator, change out the capacator bolted to it also. Make sure all your wires/cables are in good shape and the connections are clean. Hope this helps.
