. "Hot Nites in Kamloops" show and shine

Hi all,
Laurie and I drove up to Kamloops this last weekend and we had a blast! The weather was pretty good, although we had 3 short rain squalls during Saturday's show and shine event, and had to take the chamois cloths out of the trunk and wipe down and dry off the GT/CS each time. There were 6 blocks of Kamloops downtown Victoria Avenue blocked off to display all the participating cars, and there was a great variety of cars represented.
We finally got the car back together on Wednesday night about 11:00 pm and then got back up at 5:30 the next morning to head out to the ferry and drive up to Kamloops. We did the "Poker Run" on Friday and the show and shine on Saturday, and then drove back down on Sunday. We put on 653 miles during the trip and averaged just over 12 mpg (by the way that is 12 mpg in US gallons which equates to about 14 1/2 mpg in Canadian gallons, and that included a few "unavoidable" burnouts and several run ups through the gears!) All in all it was $256.16 in fuel WELL spent!
We finally got the Cobra Le Mans valve covers installed to match the Cobra Air Cleaner, but didn't get time to install the new plug wires and really clean things up properly. We replaced all of the front suspension including lower A arms, tie rods, ball joints, shocks, etc., and the car handled beautifully driving on the highway. We have a bit more work left to do, but the "to do" list is finally getting shorter ...
We had an awesome time in Kamloops and we're planning to drive up again next year and do it all again!

One of the things we did was to allow several spectators to sit in the car and have their photos taken. Most of them were amazed that we'd let them do that and they thanked us profusely! Of course the young kids were the most fun and they were PUMPED!

I emailed the show organizers last night and I suggested that in future maybe some of the folks displaying their cars (that were willing to do it) could offer a "photo op" with their cars to the attending spectators for a small donation that could then be passed on to a charity organization at the end of the show? I suggested that the organizers could have a charity booth, where for a small donation the spectators would receive a suitable sticker to place on their shirt or jacket, and that participating cars could also display a similar sticker on their cars or display materials, designating the cars which could be photographed with the spectators that had made a charity donation. Just a though that came to me later, so we'll see what they think of the idea ...

You really covered all the bases when it comes to maximum deployment of your awesome 'S' ...from enthusiastic restoration, to thundering all that distance (@12 mpg, to some classy burnouts (ask me how I know;-), to dressing her up & proudly showing with all those cars, to (my favorite) letting people sit in the driver's seat for memorable pictures!

Add your generous and informative nature to the mix - and I'll bet you made as many other people proud as the pleasure you received!

Yeah, that 70 GTO was a real fire breathing monster and he did drive it around town a little bit during the events. The RCMP award a special trophy each year and he was the winner this year. He won the trophy for the "Car Most Likely to Receive a Speeding Ticket Sitting Still"!

Friday clean up ...

I spent most of the Friday before the show and shine in the driveway of Laurie's cousin's house doing the clean up and detail work on the car. That was nearly as much fun as the show and shine. Several of his neighbours dropped by during the process and complimented us on how the car looked.

Well, as a footnote to last weekend's trip to Kamloops for the show and shine, when we got home from the 653 mile round trip I gave the car back to my mechanic friend Chris to finish up the last few little things that we didn't have time to do before Kamloops and guess what ...?
He drove it a few miles out to a friend's alignment shop to check the the alignment off all the new front end components that were recently installed. (We just roughed aligned it in his driveway with his tools before the trip.) On the way back from the alignment shop the rear end started to make some nasty noises and he barely got it back to his place without having to have it towed. The passenger side rear axle bearing had seized ... solid ...
Good thing it didn't happen on the trip as we put on a lot of highway miles at speed and it would have likely snapped the axle. He just finished changing both axle bearings out today, and I got the car back tonight about 6:30. I just finished doing a wash, clean, and detail job in the driveway so that I can take it to another local show and shine tomorrow morning. (It is definitely hard to do detail work in dark!) I'll take some more photos of tomorrow's event and add another new thread as soon as I can get the time.
