1968 Photos of engine and transmission casting numbers, VIN

As part of my engine disassembly and reassembly, I was happy to confirm my 289-2V engine and C4 transmission are original to my HCS. I was 99% sure because I'm the 2nd owner and the first owner told me he never did any engine work, but it's always nice to have it verified.

So there's a "302" cast into the lifter valley of the engine block, but "289" is cast into each head. I know 1968 was a transition year from 289 to 302 engines, so does this mean when my car came off the assembly line Ford had already run out of 289 blocks and so used a 302? (with the 289 internals and heads)

That's how mine was built.
