I was at a cruise night on Thursday and someone I know has a 66 Shelby Fastback and he dabbles from time to time finding NOS Parts. I asked him to have a look at my engine and if he saw anything that would remind him of his inventory at home that I maybe interested in having.

He had Valve Covers and then he told me he had a battery holder 1968 the ones that are metal and rubber which I needed. The next day he delivers the Items along with a Thermactor Air Manifold NOS Section 8-65 in owners manual.

We looked at my engine and sure enough I didn't have one. Do you guys have them on your cars?

Please post a photo, or a drawing, or something.

Thanks

Edit to add;
Only manual transmission cars had the thermactor smog system.

If you're talking about the tubes, or rails (see last photo), they were not used on 289s in '68 (not sure about the other engines). The Thermactor smog system for that engines was a pump, a backfire canister, and 2 check valves that attached to the front of one head and the rear of the other. But again, only for manual transmission cars.

That's one thing that they got me is the bolts holding the battery. I have repos on and they said that they are to long. Another time they said that the muffler clamps were to long and they are NOS ones.

I misunderstood the book. Sorry about that.

If you have the 68 Shop manual SE-735-68 Chapter 8 Fig 2 this part attaches around the Exhaust Manifold on the passenger side of the engine and a pipe goes up to the air cleaner. It is supposed to assist with the choke.

That would be a heat shield. If you are using the standard air cleaner housing you need the heat shield and riser.

I'm lovin' this thread. I've never seen, let alone work on a thermactor system. Of course I always opt for an A/T instead of manual, and don't know if eastern cars were required to have this setup. Appreciate the education guys!

Right, a "heat shield" that makes sense now. Sorry about the initial screw up guys.

Mosesatm, the repro seem to look a little differant to the original. I still need the "riser" which is a round flex pipe. The picture in the book shows a rectangular riser on a 289 I guess it depends what air cleaner housing your car comes with.

Thank you

There should not be a round flex pipe.

Here's a photo of how it should look.

Canadian DSO Fords had different requirements in 1968. As I recall, they closely resembled the 1967 Federal emissions air cleaners. "Open" systems rather than "closed" PCV systems is what I recall.
