I watched it for the cars (car) and the technologies they were showing ... I wasn't expecting emmy winning performances or anything ... it's just an hour of TV that I don't have to think and just watch
It might have been mentioned here but I was reading up on it and they used GT's to make KITT and the work was done by Galpin Ford.
"To portray the new KITT, Ford donated six production Mustangs to the film studio. Since the GT500KR isn't yet available, the cars were actually Mustang GTs equipped with automatic transmissions. (Automatics are preferred for film work.) The initial mechanical and bodywork on the prototype KITT was done by Galpin Auto Sports — from MTV's
Pimp My Ride — and includes not only the necessary body pieces but reinforcements from the Ford Racing catalog including a lowered suspension and a Whipple supercharger. That blower, says Ford, swells output of the 4.6-liter SOHC V8 from 300 to about 500 horsepower."

I also might have mentioned Val Kilmer is the voice of KITT but wasn't originally supposed to be.
From the NY Daily News 2 weeks ago:
Funnyman Will Arnett just got bumped from the "Knight Rider" remake as the voice of K.I.T.T., the talking car. It seems GMC Trucks, for whom Arnett voices the ads, didn't like that K.I.T.T. is a Ford Mustang - and expressed that displeasure through their lawyers.
I still think GMC needs to work on that airbag problem where they don't go off in a high speed front end crash! :icon_pani
