1968 Wheels for 68 GTCS

Anyone by chance know what wheels originally came on the 68 GTCS? Ive seen pics but dont know what they are called or where to find them.

...Wheel options for the GT/CS are the same for any '68 Mustang. You may wish to order a Marti report for your car to determine which wheel it came with. Or simply choose the style you like best. I believe the Shelby 10-spokes were an option as well...

The Style Steel wheels in the photos appear to be chrome. I thought the '68's were Argent, '69's Chrome. ??????????

I looked at other Marti's here that showed wheels listed and not listed... You have a nicely optioned car nonetheless. Do you have any prior owner history perhaps?

I believe the GT/Cs were Argent, if you had a GT optioned car they were chrome, is this not so?

I would have to assumbe that it had standard wheel cover since there is nothing optioned on the Marti report.
I would pick what you like, you can allways go back.
Yes chrome styled wheel were a 68 option. And it had nothing to do with GT statis.Marty

If I recall correctly, the GT optioned cars were Argent, the optional Styled Steel Wheels for other V-8s were chrome.

I was wrong. I went back and checked and your guys were right in 68 the GT package did include argent styled steel wheels. You could up grade to the chrome.

Here are some pics of the wheels on it now ... not sure if it maybe had hub caps or what? If you believe it the original color was candy apple red, and someone had the nerve to take a can of blue spray paint to her. The hood and front quarter panels are from another car and are completely rusted, will need to be replaced for sure.

...Well, those definitely aren't the correct wheels in any case...

cinz, how do you want to proceed with this restoration ie; "driver", "original", "show" condition? Give some folks here an idea of how to best help you... Complete tear-down and rust removal paramount before anything IMO.

Seeing as how both front fenders, the hood _and_ the passenger door have been replaced, I'd look for collision damage as well as rust. You don't want to put a bunch of money into a car that goes down the road 'crab-wise'.

Im not to terribly interested in showing it. Id like to just be able to take it out for fun now and then, id like it to look original for the most part - but im not worried about it being 100% authentic. I really want it to look nice and run just as nicely, this is the car i have wanted since I knew what a car was... (not necessarily the GTCS, but that is a nice little plus :tongue: I've always been in love with the 60's models ... 70's got a little weird). I bought it from a close friend, who did get in a wreck but swore up, down , sideways and backwards that there was no damage to the frame and that any damage was just superficial. He got the hood and quarter panels from a junk yard and they were allready somewhat rusty. I have the original door, it just has a small ding that needs fixing. When my friend bought it, it allready had the blue paint so there is no telling what may lay under it, and wont really know until im able to get it media blasted. Speaking of, any reccomendation on how to get the paint of the trunk lid? Im sure media blasting will be to agressive for the fiberglass.

Soda blasting is safe for fiberglass. Dry ice may work, too

I have yet to find anyone here in Bakersfield, CA that does dry ice blasting. I have found one guy that does soda blasting, and he does have pretty good reviews ... but seems to be pretty limited out here.

Have you checked out CALBLAST.com? I have heard of the an heard some good things but have not checked on price etc.

Your choice ...

Again, the choice is yours as to which of the many versions of the factory Mustang wheels (or wheel covers) you decide to install on your car. Since there were so many factory options available to the original purchaser, nobody can really tell you that the wheels you install are wrong. Go with your personal favorite, and if you really want to have other options, then collect an alternate set of factory wheels or wheel covers (or several versions of them all)?
In the end we chose to find and restore an original set of the factory chrome GT wheels just because we really like the look of them. (I spent about 5 hours hand polishing this set of rims to bring them back up to snuff!) Our car was a factory GT optioned car so there might have been a set of these on it originally, but again our Marti doesn't confirm the style of wheel or wheel covers that the car was supplied with from the factory when it was new. We don't have any info on the orginal purchaser either, so can't confirm it anyway. I definitely didn't like the looks of the "Centerline" style mags that were on it when I bought it, so they had to GO!

Lots of choices. Mine came with the standard wheel covers. Then I went to the Argent wheels. Then I opted for the 15" $helby wheel$ !!
