Why did CA deem the Marchals illegal?

Hey all,

My 15 year old son asked me the question "Why did California make Ford change out the Marchal lights with the Lucas lights on the CS?"

I know that they were recalled to do this change, but what was the reason?

Anyone know the details?

Only things I can imagine is that they were too bright or too high up on the grill.

I have always heard they were too bright as well. I don't know about anyone else but with ours now, they don't seem to bright at all. This could because the bulbs are different than they were back then?? Who knows, but I like the floating look the Marchals have in the grill.

There were 2 problems with the lights. The brightness as Jason mentioned and the mounting brackets in the grille allowed the lights to bounce around too much changing the positioning of the lights. By using the Lucas lights mounted on a pedestal they (Ford) figured it would help stabalize the lights.
I'm with you Paul, I like the Marchal's much better with the floating look.
