Why there wasn't a 427 for 1968.

Mustanger.... a couple things about what was written.
Marti even backs up the what-if theory: “Ford might have built them in such small numbers that they never showed up as a Code, kind of like the ’67 Shelbys that had an S engine code (390) and were, in fact, packing the 428.”

Think Jerry crossed his wires here a bit in print or maybe its just his style. Because of early 67 VIN issues and the way Ford entered the order information in their database there were a handful of 350's with A's in the Ford VIN but haven't seen any of the 500's yet with an S in the VIN.

Since buyers and dealers never saw these numbers they would have never expected anything other and a Hipo or a 428

There were a number of 68's that were shipped with 390's rather than the 428's due to supply issues. Not sure anyone caught it till years later.

"I heard about two of them in California! An MCA Gold Judge there knows about them. He has inspected and documented them. Both these cars are drag cars and have a W in the fifth digit of their VINs."

Where did this one come from??

There was a W code 68 that was built in Europe in the 80-90's but from what I understand the number were run and Ford records showed it with another engine code.

J_Speegle,

The info I posted all came from the link I supplied earlier:

http://www.mustangmonthly.com/thehistoryof/mustang_facts/

... the 2 anecdotes are 2 sidebar articles, located at the bottom of the main Mustang Monthly article (go to the end and click on the links in bold below) ... I'm sure you all know, these MM articles are archived from the magazine copies printed earlier, I remember reading this article(s) earlier from my subscription copy which is now stored in my garage ...

Question: If a '67 or '68 GT500 had a 427, what would their VIN (Ford or Shelby) designate? Thanks ...

Paul... yea. Because I think I'm the judge he was referring to. But he got some of the details wrong, likely because he got everything second hand - talking to Perkins or someone else- rather from me :(

They would receive the normal/regular VIN since this would have been a change (original engine pulled and replaced) I believe only one car has been documented (lots of claims and even faked up paperwork) so this really has little application.

Have seen hundreds of owners over the years that thought or claimed that the dealer or Shelby put in the engine but never seen any proof

I asked my friend, Vincent Liska, who is the 1968 (and '69-'70) Shelby Registrar about any '68 427-factory Shelbys.

Here is his answer (I was allowed to quote him):

There were "NO" 1968 Shelbys with 427 "NONE" from the factory, and "IF" there were any dealer installed, then the v.i.n. would be for 1968 (GT) 500 or KR no change "BUT" proving is another item. "NO" one has proved to me yet they have a dealer installed 427 1968 Shelby."

I will get back with info on 427s in '67 Shelbys.

"Vinny" is such a great help.

Should get back the number "1" often referred to as the Super Snake... and somewhat (in the last couple of years) recently restored. It was in LA a couple of years back (where I last saw it) at the SAAC annual. Friend got to take it for a drive .... not sure how he got that to happen :)
