Mustanger.... a couple things about what was written.
Think Jerry crossed his wires here a bit in print or maybe its just his style. Because of early 67 VIN issues and the way Ford entered the order information in their database there were a handful of 350's with A's in the Ford VIN but haven't seen any of the 500's yet with an S in the VIN.
Since buyers and dealers never saw these numbers they would have never expected anything other and a Hipo or a 428
There were a number of 68's that were shipped with 390's rather than the 428's due to supply issues. Not sure anyone caught it till years later.
Where did this one come from??
There was a W code 68 that was built in Europe in the 80-90's but from what I understand the number were run and Ford records showed it with another engine code.
Marti even backs up the what-if theory: “Ford might have built them in such small numbers that they never showed up as a Code, kind of like the ’67 Shelbys that had an S engine code (390) and were, in fact, packing the 428.”

"I heard about two of them in California! An MCA Gold Judge there knows about them. He has inspected and documented them. Both these cars are drag cars and have a W in the fifth digit of their VINs."
