Hello All ,

Today i was updating my CV , during which my template prompts me to insert Membership of Clubs or associations.

I feel obliged to insert that I am a fellow of the following society

The society for preservation and documentation of the Californian Special motor vehicle.

would this be acceptable ? Are we a society or just a forum ?

lets hear what you think.

A society is a grouping of individuals, which is characterized by common interest and may have distinctive culture and institutions. In a society members can be from a different ethnic group. A "Society" may refer to a particular people, such as the Nuer, to a nation state, such as Switzerland, or to a broader cultural group, such as Western society. Society can also be explained as an organized group of people associated together for religious, benevolent, cultural, scientific, political, patriotic, or other purposes.

I would say yes we could be considered a society.

Well, yes, in a digital sort of way. Not in a traditional way, unless and until we meet in person, or talk on the phone.

A lot is left to be desired within this context. Little inflection, or "real" interaction that would be there for a "society" in the traditional sense, is here.

So, I guess, within most of the defination, we would be a society, although I think the word has a bit of an "aloof-ness" to it.

I prefer "family" to "society", because we've had things happen here that has involved some bonding, like extended families have done.

But--this is getting a bit too academic for me...it will be interesting to see where this thread goes. It may ferret out some other observations.

For what it's worth,
Paul N.

Hmmmm, well I belong to another family of specific car owners and it is named The Professional Car Society.

I haven't yet attended a membership meeting as we are worldwide but plan on going to the first west coast international meet here in SoCal in July. I do pay dues to two different organizations and am starting to attend their functions and get their newsletters so I do say generically that I belong to a car club, for what ever that means to anyone.

Lot's of recent books on the "digital society" such as Friedman's "The World is Flat". Many would consider "myspace" a collection of societies. However, to put that on a resume' would be pushing it a bit. I value all of us as family and friends (if any are ever in Chicago - please contact me and I would love to meet up). Even given the "digital society" discussion, I think we would need to be considered a "Forum" or "Alliance" in the absence of our being a club. These (Forum or Alliance) are well known technical terms in the world of standards bodies, which people put on their resume's.

I would vote for GT/CS Forum as a title. My two cents. Casey

(as reference look up OMA - Open Mobile Alliance, DLNA - Digital Living Network Alliance, LIF - Location Interoperability Forum - as examples in the standards world)

"Society" sounds kind of refined to me, and I am River Trash.
(If anyone wants to spend a weekend white water rafting on the Salmon River in Idaho with me, contact me and we'll arrange a date)

...Come & go as you please, no dues paid, no creed, no meetings, no bylaws and no BoD... No badges, pins, berets or medals... PERFECT!

I've done my time with organized clubs and "societies" where the "organization" becomes like paying a huge income tax before enjoying the fruits.

Here it is simple. A forum to be who you are when you want with freedom to make a difference and ignore stuffiness w/o need for a vote.

That said, I will always enjoy my GT/CSs to the fullest with or without group consensus. But (to me); what Jon has already established here is the best! A place for car owners to share information, adventures and (where related) life in general...
