Route66 Redux

Thanks for the article. I always like reading the NY Times!

What would be cool is to restore the town of Amboy into a "frozen in time" resort for car clubs up to about 1969. People would have to wear period clothes, etc., to get in. kind of like a Renaissance Fair, but it's dated from 1950-1969.

I could see a contingent of GT/CSs making the trip to this mecca. Have a "1968" weekend there.

With being three hours out of L.A., it;s far enough to make it a destination for period events like this.

Very Cool.

Paul,
Amboy has had a bad rep to tourists in the last few years due to the rude proprietors but the newest owner of Amboy is Albert Okura, founder of the SoCal restaurants Juan Pollo. http://www.imdiversity.com/Villages/Asian/history_heritage/pc_okura_town_0604.asp
Check it out. I have met him at a few car shows and talked to him. Currently he has some issues with the water supply in Amboy. Something like that. But he plans to restore the town to it's heyday. I have some cool photos somewhere of the old motel and bus, signs, etc.

Never heard of Amboy before. Interesting that a guy can buy a town for $450K. Looked it up on Google maps...

If you're not familiar with Google maps you can turn on the Satellite or Hybrid option (in the top right) and, if you do a bit of panning up/down Route66, actually zoom in on Roy's (at least what I think might be Roys) which looks to be the only motel on that stretch of road...

Yes, It is Roy's. There really isn't much there other than the motel and Roy's with a gas station. There is a working United States post office across the street a bit. There are some run down old houses nearby too, probably for railroad workers back in the day, as the tracks go right through there.

Have you tried downloading Google Earth software?

It gives you some pretty neat options like "fly over" views and the ability to tilt and pan.
Plus 3D, building outlines, etc.

I can create the view of the mountains I have from my front porch ... pretty wild.

Wow! That's very cool. You can actually "fly" over the map. They must use the satellite photos along with an altitude data to get the height of the mountains, etc. Thanks!

Hey, you can actually tool down Route66 past Roy's. Way cool! Of course, Roy's seems a bit flat when you get down really close to the road

It is pretty cool.

If you do directions on it, it attempts to "drive" them as a fly over that you can watch. It needs a little work but it's got a cool factor to it in any case.

Metropolitan area pics are very detailed and it works all over the world.

There was an article once that you can see people sunbathing nude in England I think on there. But that's another topic.

In yesterday's newspaper there was a photo of Albert Okura and some officials from the county standing in front of Roy's motel/cafe and a story about it getting a makeover. No mention of a start or finish date. I'll keep you all posted.
