I believe the 317,404 is close to the total number of Mustangs built in 68.
4118 of those Mustangs were California Specials.

My Elite Marti Report says there were 317,423 Mustangs produced in 1968.
249,456 were hardtops (coupes). 4,118 were California Specials (coupes only). Of those, 251 were High Country Specials. In actuality, there were 3,867 California Specials produced in 1968.

Those numbers only add up to 88,311.
I'm confused, am I missing something? And what is a '68 Hatchback? A fastback? Just where did your numbers come from?

I have:

Calendar Year production 317,404:

248,447 Coupes, with included the GT/CS and HCS.
25,376 Convertibles
42,581 Fastbacks

Thanks--

Maybe the lady at Ford thought you said 1978 Mustangs (hence the hatchbacks) and did`nt have a clue what a California Special was?

So Paul, is my Marti report wrong?

There seems to be a 19 car difference. I think Kevin Marti included some of the prototypes and crash cars--so I'm not sure.

Not that it would affect our GT/CS numbers, but I have records of one or two "durability" GT/CS cars that Ford made before production. Presumably for the testing of the fiberglass, and stripes, as well as maybe crash testing of those same parts. This was done at the same time as the '68 Shelby.

The total numbers we're talking about here (317K) don't include those Mustangs made for export--and there is a 354K number I need to check out for total Mustang production that I have in a book (Automobile Quarterly).

Since Marti's numbers are from Ford, I don't dispute them, I just need to account for all the descrepencies. One more thing to sort out...

On a related note.

Took my 68 CS to a show this past weekend and met someone at the show that has an 07 CS on order. Should be getting it shortly.

The salesman told him they were only making 5,000 and there would be no 2008's.

Is either true?

I didn't want to say anything because I wasn't 100% sure at the time.

Hey...

I saw a "4,500" 2007 CS production number once, but I have yet to confirm.

If you had Mustangs on the lot, would you (as a salesman) want to talk about '08's? There ARE going to be '08 GT/CSs. I don't know where this stuff comes from...

I wouldn't bank too much on what (some) salesmen "know" about upcoming Fords. They have in-store updates and classes and info to take home and read--about the current models. A lot of "salesmen" knowledge is scuttlebutt, and rumors about distant upcoming Fords. Even if they knew something, it wouldn't change their trying to sell you something available on the lot TODAY.

A person could find out more either here, or other late model Mustang websites on the net--to find out the latest. Then you can fill in your local saleman (or saleswoman) with your knowledge on the GT/CS.

In early '06, when I'd ask a Ford salesman about the upcoming GT/CS or if Ford was going forward with the prototype Boss 351, I'd just get a confused look and "A what?" I think most car salesmen aren't even car guys, it's just a job to them, the same as if they were selling home appliances.

From Mustangs by the Numbers

Total 1968 Mustangs 317,423

Hardtops 249,456
Sport Roofs or Fastbacks 42,582
Convertibles 25,385

The most popular engine (in the coupe or hardtop) was the C code 289-2V with C-4 automatic transmission - 114,973 Coupes.

The most popular color was, surprise, code I Lime Gold. About 14% of all coupes.

Coupe interior code 1A most prolific with 89,400 or about 36% in any colored 1968 Mustang coupe.

Thanks to Kevin Marti for the data.

LOL, Steve....you're "so diplomatic". I was thinking that too, but wondered if there were and car salesmen here reading this thread...

We usually know more about upcoming Mustangs than most dealers! Maybe we should just hand them a copy of Mustangs & Fords or Motor Trend.

As far as I know they are making a 08 and there is some small changes on them, about total numbers, not for sure at present.
