A couple quick questions for those of us who are not engine rebuild experts:
What are considered performance heads if GT40 heads are not?
Shouldn't the base 400hp engine have forged pistons?

A couple quick questions for those of us who are not engine rebuild experts:
What are considered performance heads if GT40 heads are not?
Shouldn't the base 400hp engine have forged pistons?

The GT40 heads listed above are GT40P heads, which are good high performance Ford factory, cast iron heads ... these were based on the earlier '93 Cobra GT40 cast iron heads, and they could be found in Ford Explorers and Mercury Mountaineers. Some people claimed that they were the best factory 302 heads that Ford made, although their spark plug angle made fittment of certain headers impossible.
However Ford Racing did make GT40 heads (X heads and Z heads) which are aluminum, and are even rated for more hp.

Keith Black Racing Pistons are also supposed to be good, but maybe it's better to get more details as to their spec's:

Just figured out that this outfit is the same one that I purchased my 393 stroker from.

I was very concerned about purchasing a crate engine from a company that was not local (I am in Colorado, they are in Indiana). But after getting references and seeing their prices, I went for it.

First engine did not go very well. Connecting rod bolt was hitting the pan and making noise (pulled the pan and easily fixed this issue) but soon after had bearing failure. I was not too happy.

After several discussions with Les and Stan about the best way to remedy the situation, Les decided to drive out to my house with a short block in his trunk, took out the old engine, build up the new short block and re-installed it into my car...all in my garage over two days. Pretty good warranty if you ask me!

That was last May. Engine has been running very stong ever since, no issues.

I have suggested that they run the engines (even dyno them) before shipping. This seems to be a problem as they then have to drain all the liquids and this could cause shipping issues.

Overall, a satisfied customer. PM me if you want more details.

LOVE the garage - looks like a great place to work on your car! I was wondering if you would share with us your build and or work done on your motor that is sitting in the back ground. Did you try to make any improvements? Could you give us the specs on your rebuild, cam, carb ect and the results. I ask because you decided to go with a new block rebuild. Also, did you have any issues with the trans and third member with the new increase in Hp?

Here is the info from the build sheet. Don't believe the desktop Dyno numbers. My best guess...Maybe 400 HP, 300-325HP range at the rear wheels. Will be changing the ignition (Performance Distributors DUI) and larger exhaust sometime soon, then will have it dyno'd.

I went with these guys because their price was really good, no one local could even come close and they had good references.

I have a built up C4 (no concerns handling the HP and lighter than a C6) and a stock 8" with limited slip and 3.55 gears. Added subframe connectors. If it blows it blows. Been two years, lots of runs at the stip, no issues...yet.

Runs really consistently at the drags....14.2 -14.4 over my last 6 passes (about 13.2@102MPH converted for altitude, I am in Denver). Ran last Saturday, best time was 14.29. It was 40 degrees outside, not much traction!

Way in the background of the picture is the 302 (service replacement, not original) that was in the car when I bought it. Gave it to my 15 year old son as a project to clean up. Thought he did a good job. Amazing what a can of spray paint will do!

I went with the 351W because I wanted more Cubic Inches and I think it is a stronger block. Also, bolts in pretty easily.

Time slips attached from last weeks runs. Bandimere speedway is 5,860 feet above sea level. I have heard people say to take 1 second off your ET's for the altitude. Seems to be fairly consistent with the conversion table I found located at:

http://www.wallaceracing.com/altitudecorrection.htm

I have been really pleased with the engine's performance and the consistency of this car. My goal is to get into the 13's. Main issue right now is traction. I am running Nitto NT555R Drag Radial 245-50-16. Best time came at 15psi.

As David Athans has said, more people should race. It is a blast! In the summer I race in the club clash division against other clubs typically twice a month on Friday nights.

I feel a need to post this link, especially after my previous posts. Seems I got a decent deal, but many, many others have been scamed. Please beware if you use this vendor. They are Indy based and appear to sell on ebay and swap meets using several different names. Easy to identify, though, they always use the same address and phone number.
