Build a '68 GT/CS " '07 Shelby chaser"

I was watching a Ford commercial tonight that shows their new lineup, and in the cars they're showing off (in an airplane hangar), is a white Shelby GT-500. They show it going down a tunnel, and all kinds of cool angles....that is one bada$$ Mustang!!

So, I'm thinking to myself....hmmm....<<pondering>>

"I just happen to know a group of people" that are part of that same pride of Mustang ownership....and I'd like to see what they could come up with in maximum street performance/nasty sleeper for the '68 GT/CS.

So, I'm throwing out this request to all of you: what would a high-performance GT/CS include?

My only conditions are (for this exercise):

1. The car must look as stock as possible. A "few" mods that may not be 100% stock, but this would be a GT/CS that most people would appreciate as "street-concours", but VERY hot on the street, and would give a late model Mustang, Vette or GTO a hard time....

2. Vintage performance parts are cool, too, especially Shelby parts. Anything in the Shelby catalog at that time. Intakes, wheels, etc. "Some" of the Unique Performance type parts are OK, too.

3. You're only limited to the stock frame/chassis/unibody, the stock color, stripes, and fiberglass. Stock rims, or Shelby wheels (like ten spokes). Any type of tires for up to 15" dia. wheels. Stock rims can be widened.

4. Your choice of engine from 1968, from the 6 cyl, to the 428CJ. You can build a stroker, any type of heads and intake. You can even include the new Ford BOSS 302 block, and the Shelby aluminum 427 block. You can even include a Paxton blower. A 5-speed is OK, since you can't really see it underneath.

5. Pretty much a stock interior. Stock consoles, etc. Not real concerned about the interior as much, since this is all about HP. A roll bar is OK, and four-point harnesses, too.

6. Suspension can be a little more radical. TMC, or lowered a-arms, Global West, etc. Coil over shocks, etc. No welding stuff, no Mustang II stuff. Rack & Pinion OK.

So...let 'er rip!! Let's do it! (this might end up as food for thought to some of you out there...)

thanks!! Paul N.

How about a supercharged 347 stroker backed up by an AOD?

Joe,
I think your car fits the bill when it comes to answering Paul's thread ... talk about performance sleeper ... well, as long as your hood is closed - lol ...

That's a tough one Paul. You asked for maximum street performance and then limited us to 40 year old technology. A supercharged 408 Windsor stroker with coil over shocks is about the best we could do---oops, no Windsors in '68. If we put in a big block, handling suffers. I guess the supercharged 347 is it.

I'd perhaps Start with one of these engines from Keith Craft:

Fully machined Ford Racing block, Scat or Eagle Billet crank, billet rods, 15:1 JE pistons, Plasma moly rings, Federal Mogul bearings, Comp Cams solid roller camshaft, Danny Bee belt drive, ATI damper, Melling HV oil pump, Canton wet sump oil pan, Crower solid roller lifters, Comp Cams pushrods, Ford Racing C460 heads fully CNC ported, ARP fasteners, T&D shaft mount rockers, Ford Racing intake ported, Ford Racing valve covers, MSD Distributor, MSD wires, Custom Pro-System carb, water pump, balanced, blueprinted & assembled. Includes carburetor, water pump, distributor with polymer gear, Ford Racing or Moroso plug wires, Keith Craft logo'd valve covers & gaskets.....................$23,995

I would also consider using the Total Control suspension package, with Rack and Pinion, A Currie rear end, and a 5 speed Tremec tranny.

Oh Baby!!!

Yes, I know it seems like a contradiction...but for the sake of arguement, I just wanted to see what could be done in HP, but keep it looking "stock" as possible....or at least what perf parts you could have had in '68.

"IF" the 347s are the way to go--and that they are reliable, then maybe we should push that idea....since about 85% of all GT/CSs had the 289 or 302 block in it. I'm thinking that with today's tech, we could promote the 347 idea, to match HP with the car's looks. A vintage Paxton on the 347 would be even MORE awesome. Add ten-spokes, and you'd be at about "70% "Little Red".

an analogy, although a bad one, would be how folks put 454 rat motors in Vegas. Something you thought was cool...and scary at the same time. I'd like to think of folks wondering if today's upgraded '68 GT/CSs were a lot more nasty with a 347, but they still looked bone-stock...

That way, you'd have heritage, history, and horsepower all into one.

I can see a "347 GT/CS HiPo Club" forming right now...who wants to join?

And just to be clear, the new Shelby would be chasing this car, not the other way around.

Be careful Joe... The new 07 Shelby is right there in horsepower! In the quarter mile your car will be a bad ass, but the Autobahn..... You will be short on supension and I bet on top end.

Paul,
Either an all aluminum Windsor based 427 or an all aluminum 427 FE stroked to 482 via Survival Motorsports. 650 HP plus easy, and more if you want. Single dominator. Block, heads, and intake powder coated Ford Blue with a stock 390 air cleaner. Shold be very dependable. No big block weight problems. Lighter than an all iron small block.

They have an IRS bolt in now for about $10k in the rear. I would do the Fatman Fabrications power rack and pinion conversion on the front. Still carries the weight of the subframe up to the firewall. Much stiffer that any of the other rack and pinion conversions. Baer brakes and a Richmond 6 speed. Top end and possible handling to keep up with the 07 Shelby.

With the hood open you would think it was a 390 GT/CS. Jury out if it could hang at top speed with a new Shelby on the bahn. They have come so far in suspension and geometry.

Now if I could just win the lotto!!!

I'd have to agree that my car would be short on suspension, so I would be afraid to drive it at top speed. But where the new Shelby may be close in HP, it's also much heavier. My car will pull to 6000 RPM easily. Hell, under acceleration it doesn't even kick into overdrive until past 120. But that's about where I'd start backing off. Then the chasing would be over.

You see, Joe's GT/CS's horsepower has exceeded the car's aerodynamics.

Back in late '67, when a writer for Road and Track borrowed Little Red for a weekend, he drove it up to about 140, and the front end started to lift up, like a hydroplane boat about to become airborne. The cops pulled the writer over, and had to look under the hood, to see what the *@%# was in there!

It would be interesting to see Joe's CS vs. a '08 Shelby on the drag strip.

Joe's CS is so (we'll say: "venemous") that I asked him to "slightly gun it" for a video take, and he left 5 feet of scratch marks on the street.

It's "Mr. Toad's Ride on steriods.

Stock 8' I think would be limited but to own the first 50 yards what about a changing your 289/302 to a HiPo Cam (C30Z-6303), solid lifters and roller rockers? Stock appearance but a little more gitty up?
