1968 Console Shifter Issue

I have a problem where the console shift slide catches when I shift into "D" and ends up pushing the shift indicator lettering down. I have taken it apart several times to make sure the seal is under shift indicator but after a few uses, it comes out and I have to hold it down while shifting in order to keep it from binding up. Any thoughts on what I may be missing? Thanks.

Only a guess but I would look carefully at the plastic guides that the cover runs in and see if it here is some broken or missing. Or you may have it assembled wrong.

Sounds like the slide is catching on something. Did you verify the slide moving smoothly in the grooves when you had the console out?

Might the slide be upside down?
Attached is a photo of Steve's console.

And a photo of the console from Road Warrior 1 when I removed it.

Thank you for the responses, I truly appreciate it. I took apart the console and shifter and added some photos. Hopefully someone may see something there. I held up the piece the slide goes it to show which side I had facing up when in the console.

The edge of the slide is boogered. You need a new one. NPD# 7C445-2A, $3.00
There is no backwards or forward, or upside down. It is a symmetrical flat piece of plastic

Thanks, I have a couple in over the years but is always ends up that when I shift into Drive, somehow it pops out and then gets bent. I am not sure I am putting it in correctly?

AJ, when you install the new slider, it needs to be installed with the bezel. Remove the bezel, and it needs to be slid into the sliding tabs (underneath). Then the whole works goes on top of your chrome shift lever. If you put a bend or kink in the slider, it is sure to catch on something.

Thanks, I have a new one on the way and will post some pictures before I put it back in. You would think after 25 years of owning the car I would have fixed this by now.

When you install it, make sure it slides freely in the grooves. A touch of Vaseline along each edge of the slide won't hurt.

My new slide arrived from NPD today. As you can see in the photo, it is slightly longer than the old and twice as thick. It is much stiffer. Perhaps I just had an inferior part? I took some additional photos of how I put it together and will put some vaseline on the tracks when I install. Are there any other problems noted?
