Hi everyone, I'm new to this site and I am was looking for info on the 2007 California Special when I stumbled upon your site. The 68 is beautiful! I posted a question in regard to the CS going for half a million! Would Shelby's signature really make it worth that much more? I also found this one on the ebay, seems to only pop up now and then -

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Classic-68-2-Door-8-Cyl-Automatic-California-Special-GT_W0QQitemZ170001073287QQihZ007QQcategoryZ6236QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Do you think that the new release of the 2007 will jack-up the price of the 68? I am starting to lean towards purchasing a 68 now, do you think it's a worth while investment? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

As far as I know the highest recorded selling price for a small block GT/CS is $50,000. That car was sold at Barrett Jackson Scottsdale this year.

In light of that the half million price for a 6-cylinder GT/CS seems a little on the high side of reality.

I don't know of any big block GT/CSs or HCSs that have garnered 6 figures but Scott or Jason may know of one or two.

IMHO if the 2007 GT/CS is a success the '68s will ride a nice price increase wave but if the 2007s are not a success I wouldn't expect to see much increase other than the usual speciality Mustang annual increase.

The Barrett Jackson sale seems to have increased the value of the cars by more than 25%.

If you are looking for a GT/CS or HCS why not list what you are lookin for (color, engine, trans, option, etc) and see if one of us knows of such a car. We know where most of the cars are that are for sale and we're more than happy help.

Thanks for the info! I really don't know a lot about the 68 California Special. I know that with purchasing an older vehicle there is some work involved. I consider myself a little mechanically inclined.

Looking on ebay I have seen a lot of Mustangs but I never noticed these Mustangs before. What do you think of purchasing on ebay? Does the California Special in this post look like a good deal? I just started looking and I don't want to make a hasty decision. It looks good, needs some work, but you guys are the experts!

I honestly think that you can do a bit better if you waited just a bit for the right one. I bought mine about 4 1/2 months ago online (not Ebay--see my Gallery) and paid $15,000 even. The engine was rebuilt, has A/C, top and bottom console, no rips, tears, and an above average acrylic paint job. Not a spot of rust anywhere and it's a 289. I would definitely not call my car a "show" car, but a very good/excellent driver. I added the GT slotted wheels for about $400.00 later on. I think that for 15-20k you could get yourself into a very nice 289 driver and possibly a 302.. Check some of the other online sites because that's where I got mine. My two cents. PS--The folks on this site were awesome and they walked me through what you should look for on these cars since they do have unique features. I've known about the CS since I was a kid (grew up in a Ford family in Detroit) and always thought about owning one. In my opinion, next to a Shelby, this is the Mustang to have. People don't know what they're looking at when you drive by and usually have never seen one--you get lots of looks. Robb

If you are looking for an investment, and can only afford a '68 0r an '07, then buy the '68. Like most American cars of the 1960's they were really only meant to have a service life of about 10-15 years and 150,000 miles, but the pny cars of the '60's have become enormously popular, most of them now can have ANY part sourced, evrey body and mechanical part you could ask for, and can be rebuilt from the ground up.

The 1968 Specials seem to be an investment, unlike most autos which are an asset that depreciates - the 2007 probably will be in that category but my crystal ball is too cloudy to tell. Of course the '07 will outhandle and outbrake and outcorner- and in many cases, depending on the engine selected, will outrun the '68

But driving the '68 will get you LOTS of immediate attention, good and not so good...everywhere you go!!

Welcome to this place where the LAST WORD on the '68s is to be had, as well as any question about them, answered authoritively.

Thanks for dropping by

No CS or HCS big block has hit the 6 figure mark that I know of. I would love to say they are worth that but the market price for them is not that high. Heck, MOST 68.5 CJ's are selling for less than 6 figures (larger audience for these than our cars).

Great info! I really like the idea of owning a classic. Everytime I pass the cruise night autoshows I do get a little chill that runs down my spine looking at all those beautiful classics.

I am seriously begining to consider a CS as a viable option. How do they handle? When I purchase a CS I'm not going to let it just sit in the garage, I plan on driving it everywhere!

I don't want to buy a CS thats perfect, I cant afford that right now. As a start, just so I know what to look for in a used and affordable CS, can you tell me what you all think of the one in this post. I'm kind of partial to the blue interior and the engine looks really nice!

Thanks for all of your comments and answers. I'm really glad that I stumbled upon this website!!!!

I agree with Robb in that it's overpriced for the work that is still required. I seriously doubt there will be any bids on the car.

Heck, I'd probably sell you mine for what that seller is asking.

One aqua GT/CS in Houston is probably enough anyway. It's time for Highland Green!!!

This one definitely needs work and blue is`nt the original exterior color. I would request a Marti report on this one.

Not as though people haven't tried recently, especially with that $500K one at Barrett, although I would consider that more of a restomod rather than a nice example of a 68.5. They have gathered some real good strenth isince then.
