I just recently built a 302 for my GT/CS. I pulled the original #'s matching 289 for safe keeping. Well I just got everything dialed in and what not but I have a knocking noise. I started pulling plug wires one by one till it went away and its in the #5 cylinder. None of the other 7 effect the knock just #5. Im wanting to pull the pan and see what it looks like, maybe see if the bearing is shot. If its worse I was wondering if it would be possible to pull the piston and rod out through the bottom while the engine is still in the car?

Please keep in mind that I know just enough to be dangerous, but if you just want to check the bearing you should be able to remove and replace it from the bottom.
If the problem is a wrist pin the piston assembly will need to be installed from the top so you may as well take it out from the top.

Sorry, I didnt re-read what I was posting. I did mean through the top after I remove the head. Im not sure what I was thinking when I wrote that. Either way the more I think about the more I think I'd be better off just pulling it.
