Identify box?

Could someone let me know what the small tin looking square box is located beside the radiator on the drivers side attached to the front of my car? It has a black cylinder about 2 inches long above it. The box has T or I, A, S, F on it and has wires coming out. One wire was broken and was sparking as it was touching metal in the area. My car has been surging forward when ever I drive it and we have replaced the points and distributer cap, the second time in 6 months. We put new spark plugs in it and it sounds better but it still surges and it spins the tires sometimes. Could it be something with the box I mentioned?

Rhonda,

It's the Voltage Regulator (box) and Condensor (cylindrical thing with wire).

Not sure why it's surging. Could also be a vacuum leak somewhere.

Thats what I thought it was, Thanks. A vacuum leak could be the problem cuz the engine does sound like its sucking alot of air when I rev it.

are you sure that the "problem" of it surging and spinning the tires isnt just your right foot haha....

Ha, ha, I wish. It definitely has plenty of power. It is very low geared and raps alot. But it does have the surging problem and we don`t have a clue as to why it does that. It does`nt seem to surge when it is at idle but only when I give it gas, which sounds exactly like what you were saying, lol, but all I have to do is touch the gas going 5 mph in first gear and it spins the tires and gives me whiplash.

...Rhonda, I'll bet it's that darned Highland Green paint! My (green) 390 does precisely the same thing!! ;-)

P.S. yes it used to surge, but b/c of a bad vacuum line going to the power brakes.
