289 & 302's are hydraulic valve lifters. Should need no adjusting (unless you've got a clacking sound caused by a collapsed lifter). I wouldn't jump to any conclusions until you've had the engine running for an hour or so, allowing it to get to operating temp and oil flowing through to lube everything. The blue smoke (oil) could be caused by a stuck ring (or rings) since the engine has been sitting for such a long time, and if that's the case, running the engine for a while may very well free up any stuck ring(s).
Just monitor the engine temp & oil pressure and see if the engine returns to normal operation. Then I'd do a compression check on all cylinders.
